MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -SEPT 2017 #80TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: PROTEIN RICH DISHES DAY:12 Kenyans get affected by the elections whenever they come by every 5 years… more precisely in the past decade or so. People now have a voice and make their opinions known to the public. Kenya went through its elections in Aug and the ruling party Jubilee won. The opposition took the matter to the Supreme Court and it ruled in their favor and so re – election of the President will take place again on Oct 17th (a case of rigging votes). While I praise the judiciary system for being fair and just, I’m more concerned about how the economy comes to a sluggish pace during the election year. During this morning’s…

Before I can explain the importance of protein, its imperative to know that proteins are of two kinds – complete proteins and incomplete proteins. Complete proteins means all 9 amino acids, the building blocks of protein are present such as meats. Most plant based proteins do not have all 9 amino acids present so it becomes important to mix your plant based proteins to get the maximum amount of protein requirement. We must include protein in our daily diet for the following reasons: All the cells in our bodies are composed of protein. These cells need protein to maintain and repair themselves. Every day…

Continue ReadingVeggie Shepherd’s Pie Veggie Shepherd Pie is a vegetarian version of the famous Shepherd’s Pie. Traditional Shepherd’s Pie or Cottage Pie as it is known as, has a filling of minced meat topped with mashed potatoes. Continue ReadingGuest No.10 I was supposed to post this last week but the whole schedule got messed up. I had some posts that had to b live on certain dates (that’s what happens when you’re in too many groups!) and problems with the internet. It rained a lot last week and many places in Mombasa were flooded. My 10th Guest on the blog, its my sister in law Heni. She’s married to my cousin Hiren. His mum was my 3rd guest. She had prepared Tangy Creamy Potato Curry. I’ve not had much opportunity to spend time with Heni, but whatever time we spend together at my dad’s home, their home or an outing, its fun. When I first met…

When I got married, Arti was very thin.I thought that if somebody huffed and puffed and blew her away, she would probably fly away. Her friends became my friends as I didn’t know anyone in Mombasa(except for my aunt’s family). At social gatherings she would make sure that I was not left alone. We didn’t spend that many years together as after my marriage she went off to UK to complete her beautician course. She came back and that’s when her training in the kitchen began under my…

Continue ReadingGUEST NO.3 ON THE BLOG My 3rd guest on the blog is my middle foi (fupi, paternal aunt) Manjulaben. I was really surprised when her daughter in law Heni said ‘mum’s going to send a recipe for your blog.’ When I heard that I was surprised because I thought the old generation would not really bother to measure the ingredients and do all the writing. Ok she got her daughter in law to write down the recipe as she narrated it to her. After the surprised moment, I was grinning from ear to ear because my foi or Manju aunty as we all call her is such a sport. My memories about her…well when she…

Continue ReadingEVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME: #44 INDIAN SPICES SORTED Badshahi Khichdi is a humble khichdi that is turned into a more satisfying and delicious dish that is fit for a king. Not that the simple khichdi is not tasty. Basically this khichdi is made using split pigeon pea (toor, tuvar dal) and rice. The khichdi has some added vegetables mainly potatoes and brinjals(eggplants) and is tempered using onion, garlic, ginger, chillis and spices. However, I made this khichdi my way. I have tried to give it a more ‘royal’ appeal by stuffing the potatoes and brinjals with spices, chickpea flour and peanuts. This khichdi is usually served with spiced up yogurt, but since my preparation already has quite a few spices, I decided to serve it with…
