This protein rich banana smoothie is creamy, nutritious, filling and versatile. Along with the banana, add other fruits, replace cottage cheese with Greek yogurt, enjoy it the milk of your choice, etc. The possibilities are endless. In fact this is my go to all time favourite breakfast. Quick, easy and a great way to use up over ripe bananas. Yes, I don’t throw them away ! I chop them up and freeze them. Comes in handy for smoothies, milkshakes, muffins, cakes, etc. My basic protein rich banana smoothie gives me approximately 36.2g of protein. Not a bad start to the day.
Memories
My siblings and I have grown up with my dad’s firm motto “one banana and a glass of milk every day”. That is what we mostly had for breakfast before heading off to school. While my brother and I loved our tall glass of cold KCC milk, my sister hated it. When my mum was not looking, she would hide the glass of milk in the kitchen cupboards. When my kids were growing up, a banana a day it was for them too, either for breakfast or as an afternoon snack, especially after their sports classes. I still have a banana a day – it’s just in the smoothie form. It is one of my favourite fruits. Given a choice between a banana and an apple, I choose banana. I prefer apples in desserts.

The host for this Sunday’s theme is Camilla who blogs at Culinary Cam. She requested “September 21st is International Banana Festival Day. Don’t ask me who makes this things up, but it seems the perfect time to celebrate the banana. I’ll also accept anything with plantains.” For this theme I had to share my regular breakfast. I know it is a super easy recipe but it had to be on my blog.

Ingredients Required For Protein Rich Banana Smoothie
Banana
1 medium or large ripe banana. Peel and cut into chunks. I prefer to keep them ready in the freezer. That way I don’t have to add any ice cubes to make the smoothie thick and creamy. I chop and add one banana to a small zip lock bag. Replace them as I use them. I use up over ripe bananas too for this smoothie. This means that I don’t need to add any sweetener like honey or maple syrup. Over ripe bananas are definitely much sweeter.
Cottage Cheese
Since coming to Canada, I buy cottage cheese to add to the smoothie. Sometimes I add plain Greek yogurt. When I was in Kenya, it was either strained yogurt or soft paneer. So, go ahead and choose your source of protein.
Peanut Butter
Banana and peanut butter pair so well. Also 1 tbsp of peanut butter provides 4g of protein. I prefer to buy the organic one without any added oil and sugar. Can use either smooth or chunky. You can replace it with almond butter if you wish. However, besides being more expensive, it provides only 3.4g of protein per tablespoon.
Milk
I go for normal dairy milk, sometimes it is 2% or 3.25%. Go ahead and replace the dairy milk with any milk of your choice. I really don’t see any sense in paying more for almond or oat milk when it is basically 97% water!
Salt
I add a tiny pinch of salt as the peanut butter I get is saltless. If the peanut butter is salted, no need to add salt.
Cinnamon Powder
I add some for flavour. Sometimes I replace it with cardamom powder. Occasionally I will add pumpkin pie, or apple pie spice mixture. And yes you can always add some good old vanilla extract.
Some Useful Tips
Add other fruits of your choice, like mixed berries, sapota (chikoo), papaya, avocado, mango, pineapple, etc. I like to use frozen fruits. However, you can use fresh fruit.
Add ¼ cup oats. That will up the protein by 3-5g.
Can add a natural sweetener like honey, maple syrup, date sugar, etc.
To make it vegan, replace cottage cheese with tofu, and dairy milk with plant based milk.
Add any spices or flavours of your choice.
