EVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME: #149 SALAD Now that all the Eid festivities are over, its time to get back to some healthy food. Though we don’t as per say celebrate Eid, we just can’t help gorging on the goodies that Muslim friends send home. Usually its sweet stuff and a taste here and a taste there and before you know it, sweets are eaten after lunch and dinner. I don’t know whether its just me or does it happen to all of you, let go off a regular diet and meal plan for a couple of days and I feel like I’ve added a ton of weight! Today, I just had to tell my maid to take all the sweets (mithai).. no more temptation. I’m probably…

Continue ReadingWhen one looks at suggestions for snacks that are about 100 calories per serving, mangoes are never mentioned. There is a misconception that mangoes are fattening. One cup of mango is only 100 calories, 83% of its weight is water. It is packed with Vitamin A, D, C, antioxidants and is full of healthy fiber. Mangoes were grown in India over 4000 years ago. It is believed that the Buddhists took mangoes on their voyages to other lands. By the 10th Century mangoes had reached East Africa and Middle East. Mango design or paisley is featured in textile designs for centuries. Mangoes come in small, medium and large sizes, can vary in shape too and may be either yellow, orange or red in colour and…

Continue ReadingEVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME:146TH BREAD RECIPES Breads have become such an important part of our daily diet, be it for breakfast with some butter, jam, eggs, as a sandwich for lunch, with our soups and sometimes some curries. As a snack we enjoy freshly baked rolls, buns, or snacks made out of bread. Bread is a versatile food. There have been several controversies out there indicating that bread is bad for health. I guess its only bad if you’re overeating. A couple of slices is fine. Today’s theme chosen by Kriti who blogs at Krispy Kadhai, is bread. Sometimes I like how members think. So Priya asked as to whether we have to bake a bread or make anything using bread? So that opened up a…

Continue ReadingtunatelyforRECIPE: ORANGE SAFFRON SEMOLINA CAKE Orange Saffron Semolina Cake is a soft, moist, aromatic, delectable dessert or tea time treat. Semolina gives this cake a very light and crumbly texture. Also known as Revani in Turkey and Greece the cake is usually made using semolina and plain flour. Then sugar syrup is drizzled over the baked cake to make it soft and moist. My version is different as I have replaced the flour with almond flour, added orange instead of water or milk and made it more flavourful by adding saffron. FoodieMonday/Bloghop Theme When Preethi who blogs at Preethi’s Cuisine suggested Cakes as the #145th theme, I immediately knew that I which cake recipe I would be sharing. I’ve been baking the usual eggless plain or…

Continue ReadingHave you ever taken a shot of the food for blogging and forgotten to add one of the main ingredients? It happens to me often. Usually it may be a side dish or a condiment which is not such a big deal. However, when I was taking the shoots for misal pav I knew I was forgetting something. Just couldn’t remember, even when I checked the pictures (yes now have learnt to do that, at the beginning was not in the habit of checking them). Its only when we set down to enjoy the famous Maharashtrian Street food that I realized the pav was missing. I had guests so couldn’t go and do the whole set up again. I managed to take a photo of…

Continue ReadingThe weather in Mombasa has changed from super hot to cool within a week. Feb and march were really hot, so hot that I’d want to get out of the kitchen as quickly as possible. My kitchen is partially an open plan one, don’t have a door and it leads straight to the dining area. Hubby decided to fit in an AC in the dining living room area. It would also help to bring down the temperature in the kitchen. After much planning got it fitted only for the weather to change. Since its installation have used it only once and that too it was a test drive! Many parts of Kenya are flooded. Roads have been washed away and small bridges have fallen. Homes…

Continue ReadingEVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME: #142 THE LEFTOVERS RECIPE: TAWA PULAO Tawa pulao is a flavourful, delicious and easy to make rice dish. I purposely make more of the Pav Bhaji, bhaji so that I can make this tawa pulao. Served with some yogurt, yogurt drink and papad along with chopped onions, it makes a perfect lazy day meal. Mumbai And Juhu Beach Whenever we’re I Mumbai, a walk on Juhu beach is a must nearly everyday. This year the walking session was cut short when I tripped on a brick buried in the sand and fractured my toe! Enjoying meals right from pav bhaji, dabeli, tawa pulao to falooda on the beach is what I love. However, Hubby doesn’t like to eat from the canteens on…

Continue ReadingWhere are the RAINS? Today my brain is all foggy and I can barely keep my eyes open. Last night was an uncomfortable hot night. The AC was on but I still felt hot. Its probably around 4a.m. that I fell asleep and got up at 8 a.m.! That meant it was like a mad rush getting lunch ready, getting the washing machine started and all the usual chores before 10a.m. when the water disappears from the taps. I didn’t manage to beat the clock, some chores are left and will have to tackle them after 4 when the water returns. Many parts of Kenya have rainfall to the extend that floods are closing down roads, bridges and some places are impossible to…

Continue ReadingA fad or essential? I know a number of people who follow the ketogenic diet or the keto diet. They’ve been requesting me add some keto friendly recipes to my collection. I’ve resisted so far as I just cannot get use to the idea that eating fat is good. Here for years its been drummed into our heads that fat is bad so we all have been trying to cook with minimum amount of oil, eat dry toast without butter, air fry snacks, bake instead of fry and what not. For those on a keto diet sugar is absolutely out including the natural ones like honey and maple syrup. Carbohydrate consumption at a bare minimum, fill your tummy with protein and fat. Once…

Continue ReadingModern style laddoos Majority of us love our desserts and the more sinful the better. However, in this modern age when we spend more time sitting and when our daily work or chores does not involve strenuous physical activities, we cannot really indulgent in those sinful desserts on a regular basis. I’ve stopped stocking on ice creams and haven’t made a decent sinful dessert in a very long time. The last indulgence was on my birthday when I had waffles topped with hazelnut ice cream, chocolate sauce a generous swirl of fresh cream…sigh!!!!! That does not mean I’ve become a goodie goodie or am so disciplined that I can resist all those sinful desserts. I just stay away from them. Its at times…
