Continue Readinga bread for Halloween The We Knead to Bake group started by Aparna was challenged to bake a Barmbrack for October. Just the right sort of loaf as Halloween is just round the corner. Its believed that souls of the dead walk the earth on that evening. Barmbrack is an Irish sweet bread. Walnuts, raisins, pumpkin seeds and pumpkin pie spice mix makes this bread ideal for breakfast or as a tea time treat. Memories Do you write down everything in a diary to remind you what has to be done on which day? Do you still belong to the old school where its written and not on your mobile? Continue ReadingJust too expensive We all understand that food prices are rising all the time. Sometimes its the scarcity or the petrol price. Whatever the reason may be we all are paying more for basic food. Last weekend My hubby and I went to one of our favourite restaurant to have lunch. Hubby usually orders fish and I stick to pasta(not many vegetarian options). For starters,we share the usual plate of breaded mushrooms. However, this time round we got only 6 button mushrooms on the plate. Previously we would get at least 10 – 12. On top of that the price had increased so basically for every breaded mushroom that went into out mouth,we had paid nearly 85c for it. All those living in the developed…

Continue ReadingFamily time I have been away from the blogging scene for nearly a month. I had gone to London for my nephew’s wedding. Weddings are fun but hard work also. It gave me the opportunity to meet up with my huge huge family. Since I stay far away, meeting up with them is a special treat, a special occasion. My eldest son and my daughter in law too came for the wedding. My daughter in law wore a sari for the first and carried it off so beautifully. It seemed like she has been wearing saris like forever! Its amazing how during the pre-wedding, wedding and after wedding celebrations food plays such an important role. We barely use to get breakfast out of the way…

Continue Readingmagic fruit Who would have ever thought that banana can be used along with yeast to make a delicious bread? I didn’t…. till Aparna of ‘We Knead to Bake’ challenged us to bake one for September. I thought “that’s going to be a sweet bread, so how come its a sandwich bread?” However, the bread was not sweet and besides the slight banana taste, its like any normal bread but with a soft inside and crispy crust. As soon as the loaf came out of the oven, I wanted to slice it straight away because of the delicious aroma. However, had to resist the urge but after 20 minutes just had to slice it. The warm bread was an excellent accompaniment to a wholesome…

Continue ReadingGoing all the way to Mexico Well not really, am at the moment sitting in London writing about a Mexican bread. Cemita originates from city and region of Puebla in Mexico. It refers to the bread as well as the sandwich itself. The bread bun or roll is made with flour, fat and egg and has sesame seeds on top. It has a brioche like texture, crispy on the outside and soft and spongy inside and slightly sweet. Found as street food in many cities and towns of Mexico, as well as the streets of New York and Los Angeles. The sandwich typically contains a white cheese, avocado, meat, onions, salsa and papalo herb. Papalo is very much similar to coriander. Some bakers added the herb…
