    February 27, 2017mayurisjikoni

Blank mind    Today is one of those days when I have no idea what I want to write about. Usually before I go into the recipe, I have something to write about, family events, news, thoughts etc. There is a lot happening in this world but I have no inclination to write about it.        So today I’ll just straight go to the recipe. #FoodieMonday #Bloghop team decided on a hot or cold rice recipe as our 81st theme. Taking rice as the main ingredient, we were suppose to make a piping hot dish or a cold dish. I didn’t want to make anything piping hot as its just too hot here in Mombasa. So for cold I had options of kheer, phirni,…

Cooking from a cookbook The 80th theme for #FoodieMonday #Bloghop is Cookbook Cooking. Now I certainly do not have a shortage of cookery books, they line a whole shelf in the kitchen. I’ve left some in Bangalore and have a few in Montreal. So when my friends from FoodieMonday decided on cookbook cooking, I didn’t know which one to choose. I could have played it safe and selected my favourite Tarla Dalal. However,I remembered the cookbook that my son and daughter in law had given to me as a Christmas present 2 years ago. I’d drooled over the pictures and wowed all the recipes, closed it and put it on the shelf. So I thought its time to dust it and actually make something from…

The world’s general conception of a perfect figure, ideal weight, right curves in the right places for women is colossal. A few days later and the weather changed. I hear its raining in many parts of India, France was flooded and though we don’t have any rain, its become a little cooler here. My partner Anu Kollon, blogger at Ente Thattukada gave me orange and cucumber as my secret ingredients.Check out her blog for some lovely Kerala dishes. The options with those two ingredients were to make a smoothie, ice lolly or a healthy salad. I decided to make the latter. I served the salad for dinner with home made flat bread.…

Appreciation  When one writes endearing comments on posts or facebook or likes your hard work, it brings immense satisfaction. Appreciating hard work has many advantages. One makes new connections, learns new things, makes one a better person, makes one work harder and above all makes one happy. We can appreciate what life offers us, appreciate what others do for us, appreciate when one cares for you, appreciate when someone teaches us. Appreciating someone else’s work does not make one little but on the contrary makes them benevolent. Little words like sorry, thank you, hello,  makes ones day more happy. Lets make a conscious effort to appreciate more and complain less. That sort of contradicts what I wrote in my last post, however, after venting my…

Times have changed I enjoyed reading Femina magazine for many years. I found it covered all areas – housekeeping tips, food, recipes, health, children, fashion, make up … basically anything that women identified with. It was not entirely a housewife’s magazine. It also covered modern issues, balancing home and work, career options, finance and so many other worldly happenings. Then slowly the magazine began to change. More pages on fashion and brands started to appear. Now I find it is like any other fashion magazine and not as a whole package to cater for women from all walks of life and different interests. I have tried many recipes from Femina magazine, picked up numerous tips and drooled over food photos. A salad recipe I…

A good break Sometimes its nice to get away from the blogging world. One needs to take a break and not feel, I need to add a recipe, I need to keep my followers busy, etc etc. Though I had not planned to take a break from blogging while I was visiting my son in Montreal, it was a compulsory break. His computer was not working too well, it was just too slow. I tried uploading photos and it took forever. The first few days I missed blogging but then got busy and didn’t miss it that much. This time round hubby and I made frequent trips to the lovely vibrant and colourful Jean Talon Market. It was a good walk to and fro for both…

Salad days are back I usually go through these mood phases, wanting to eat junk food, only pasta or chatpata chaats etc. I cannot for some odd reason stick to eating the same type of food every single day. So I am back to my ‘want to eat salad’ mood. But that doesn’t mean I am satisfied with just a tomato. cucumber and carrot chopped and mixed with lettuce. It has to be different. I also don’t like the ready salad dressings so make my own. What are the advantages of eating salad? You may say they are healthy. Yes they are but along with that there are so many other advantages.Salads are nutritious, help you adopt a healthier lifestyle, helps you eat several servings…
