Guest No. 2 on the blog My second guest on the blog is my dear kaki (chachi) Charulata. Always there for me, my helper, my adviser and my sympathizer. She probably has heard a million woes from me and never has she once said “oh no Mayuri not again.” She started a fashion designing course which she had to leave half way. However her love affair with fabrics didn’t end there. While I run a mile(or rather miles) away from a sewing machine and needles, she developed a passion for stitching since she was 8! At that age I probably was helping my mum peel carrots and potatoes and reading books. My kaki is an ace quilter. She creates magic with patches. I’ve watched her work…

Its good to be back For the past few months I’d been so busy that baking challenges from the We Knead to Bake group took a back seat.I was busy preparing for my daughter’s wedding. The wedding went well and now I’m back to my routine. I’ve got quite a bit of catching up to do… Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov and Dec. Oh dear!  I managed to bake the challenge set for the month of January by a co- member of the group Amruta Kapileshwar Gaikwad. She asked us to bake Cilantro Scallion Rolls. Initially I did frown at the combination of tahini, honey, scallion and cilantro. While cilantro and scallion were not too much of a problem, I was wondering how a combination of…

Red Theme/ Valentine’s Day preparation For the month of January The ‘Shhh cooking secretly ‘ group decided to make something using red coloured food so as to give an idea to our followers what they can prepare for Valentine’s Day.My partner for this month was Amrita Iyer a food blogger whose blog is full of colour and mouth watering recipes. Check out The Food Samaritan to find out exactly what I mean. The colour red signifies many things. Love, warmth, danger, power, passion, determination, anger and desire.Red also draws our attention to danger. So as you can see its got its positive side and the negative too. Today we’re going to think of the positive things, it means life, love and passion. As I always say…

Time is flying   Imagine, we’re into the the 3rd week of  the new year. Time flies. We barely breathe a sigh of relief over the weekend and Monday arrives. #FoodieMonday #Bloghop group decided on #Bitesizefood as the 75th theme. It’s a pretty versatile theme as we could make any bite size food right from breakfast to dinner. We normally associate bite size food with appetizers or  starters. But did you know that its a fun way to serve you normal breakfast, lunch, tea time snack or dinner in small sizes? It also in a way helps you control portions if your are dieting. Mini pizzas, mini tacos, mini burgers or sliders as they call them these days, mini vada pavs, mini uttapams, mini pav bhajis,…

Amaranth Flatbread#BreadBakers Healthy Start  Happy New Year to all the members of the wonderful, wonderful group Bread Bakers. I’m so glad to be part of a group where we learn so much about not only different breads and techniques but get to know each member more through their blogs, culture and festivals. Pavani of Cook’s Hideout wanted us to begin the new year with some healthy breads. A great theme Pavani, can’t wait to check out what other participants have baked. I decided to use amaranth as my healthy ingredient. I made Amaranth Flatbread for the first time and it turned out so good. I’ll probably use that as a pizza base or make a focaccia next time. I made an apple salsa to go…

5th Blogiversary   Above picture from Google  Yes, its a milestone achieved. Its exactly 5 years ago I started blogging. Back then had no idea how to take photos, add photos, link articles, and so much more. Over the years not only have I learnt so much in the technology world but also have learnt so much in the food world. I’ve made some very good friends over the internet and met a few. I’ve learnt so much by joining groups that challenge me to bake, cook, prepare different varieties of food. I can easily say that I try out a new recipe at least once a week if not more. Some have been total disasters and some not approved by family members.   I’ve thoroughly…

A satisfying beginning to the day    Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast is breaking a fast; a fast you undergo from the time you had dinner to the time you have breakfast. Importance of breakfast has been stressed by athletes, dietician, doctors, physical trainers. Breakfast provides the necessary fuel required for the brains and body after the overnight fast. Meals usually consumed for breakfast provide important nutrients like iron, calcium, B vitamins, proteins and fibers that are necessary to function during the day. A balanced meal of carbohydrates, proteins and minerals and vitamins is what most breakfast meals provide us with. Eating cereals, eggs, lean meat, fruits, vegetables, milk products take care of the required balance meal.    Eating a…

  • Date Bread

Recipe: Date Bread This Date Bread is made using fermented dough where I have added pureed dates, chopped nuts and dried fruits. It is a sweet bread that can be enjoyed for breakfast or at tea time on Christmas Day. Can bake it a few days before Christmas. Toast it or warm it up before serving. What I like about this sweet bread is that one can use any dried fruits and nuts of their choice. Date Bread also makes an ideal gift for the festive season. Bake in mini loaf tins if you are gifting it. Memories – My Daughter’s Wedding Hope you all have had a wonderful Christmas holiday. It is really satisfying to get back to blogging after over a month. Nutan Varsh Abhinandan ( Happy New Year) Today it’s New Year for the Gujarati community. Its also Govardhan Puja day. Back in Mombasa its the day when we dress up in new clothes and go temple hopping… yes you read right not bar hopping but temple hopping. We visit all the Hindu temples in Mombasa, meet friends, relatives and acquaintances. After that it’s lunch at Ajay’s foi’s house. It usually is very hot around that time of the year so after a heavy lunch we need to take a nap. In the evenings we get ready and go to Patel Samaj to meet and greet our community people. Its also the day when I prepare some prasadam for the ISKCON temple in Mombasa. Its the…
