Matar Bateta Nu Shaak
Recipe: Matar Bateta Nu Shaak
Matar Bateta Nu Shaak is a Gujarati style peas and potato curry. A few everyday simple spices and a bit of tomato adds so much flavour to this sabji, shaak or curry. And it is one of the easiest to make, not requiring too many ingredients. No garlic or onion is used for this curry and yet it turns out finger licking good. Enjoy it with roti, paratha, poori or rice. Hubby’s all time favourite, he loves to have it with plain wheat parathas which we call bhakri.Though most Indian households know how to make this simple sabji, shaak or curry, I am blogging this recipe for my non vegetarian friends. Seriously, whenever I get invited to their place for dinner, the only curry I get is a potato one. Some variety in a simple curry would definitely make me feel good, for example add a few fresh peas and it is a game changer.
Matar in Gujarati and Hindi is peas. Bateta is potatoes in Gujarati and Shaak is a curry.
Sharing This Recipe With Sunday Funday Group
2025 and I have not posted any recipe for this fun group. I like the different themes that participants come up with. Unfortunately, due to my cataract surgery for both eyes, I was taking time off from screens. Now I am healing and allowed a bit of screen time. I could not let the opportunity to participate for the potato theme pass by. Especially, since I’ve got the new photos for peas potato curry like forever in my file. And anyway who doesn’t love potatoes! Sneha, thanks for suggesting this theme.
This recipe was published way back on 12th August 2012. Redoing it with better photos and write up for 09/02/2025.

Ingredients Required For Matar Bateta Nu Shaak
Peas
Fresh Peas preferably. However, if you don’t get fresh peas use frozen ones. That is what I have to do in Magog aa I don’t get fresh peas.
Potatoes
Preferably the Russet, Yukon or Meru Potatoes. Can easily mash a few pieces which helps to thicken the gravy or sauce for the curry.
Water
Normal tap or drinking water.
Tomato Puree
Fresh tomato puree. I usually keep the fresh tomato puree or sauce ready in my fridge for various diahes. Cut about 8-10 tomatoes into quarters. Add them to a pot with about ¼ cup water. Cover and cook till the tomatoes become soft. Blend in a food processor without much of the water. Use the water for dals, soups, stews.
Oil
Any oil of your choice. I prefer using sunflower oil.
Mustard Seeds
Rai, sarson ke dane, need some for tempering or vaghar.
Cumin Seeds
Jeera, jiru, need some for tempering.
Asafoetida
Hing. Just a little adds so much flavour. If you want a gluten free shaak or curry then avoid using asafoetida powder as it contains wheat flour. Go for the lump variety which you can soak in water before using it.
Turmeric Powder
Haldi or hardar. Adds flavour and natural colour.
Green Chillis
I prefer to use green chilli paste as opposed to chopped chillis. Add according to your taste.
Ginger
Peel and grate or mince fresh ginger.
Salt
Any salt of your choice. I add either table salt or Pink Himalayan Salt. Add according to your taste.
Dhana Jiru
Dhana jiru is an essential spice blend for Gujarati cuisine. It is one part of coriander seeds and ¼ part cumin seeds. They are roasted and ground into a powder.
Red Chilli Powder
Optional. Sometimes I add a bit if the green chillis are not hot.
Jaggery | Brown Sugar
Add a little to balance the flavours.
Fresh Coriander
Adds flavour. Include the tender stems when chopping coriander. Wash first and then chop finely.

MATAR BATETA NU SHAAK |PEAS POTATO CURRY
Ingredients
- 1½ cups fresh green peas
- 1½ cups potatoes peeled and chopped
- 2 cups water
- ½ cup tomato puree
- 1 tsp oil
- ½ tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp salt
- ⅛ tsp asafoetida
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp dhana jiru
- 1 tsp ginger paste
- ½ to 1 tsp green chill paste
- ¼ to ½ tsp red chilli powder optional
- 1 tsp jaggery powder or brown sugar
- 2 tbsp fresh coriander chopped finely
Instructions
- Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. When it is hot add the mustard and cumin seeds.
- When the seeds begin to splutter, add the potatoes and peas.
- Add turmeric powder, salt, green chilli and ginger pastes. Mix well.
- Cover the pan. Reduce the heat to low. Allow the vegetables to cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Add 1 cup water. Cover the pan.
- Let the vegetables cook over medium heat till they are done. This usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.
- Mash a few potato cubes to make a thicker gravy.
- Add the fresh tomato puree, dhana jiru, jaggery and remaining water.
- Also add red chilli powder if you are using any.
- Mix and let the vegetable simmer for 5 minutes.
- Garnish with fresh coriander and serve with roti, poori, paratha or rice.
Notes
- If you let the curry cool down a bit, it becomes a bit thick. Can cook ahead and keep.
- Add a handful of coarse peanut or cashew nut powder along with the peas and potatoes. This will give a different taste to the curry and also thicken it.
- The proportion of peas and potatoes used can vary. Add more or less of the peas or potatoes.
- If you want to make a potato curry, follow the same recipe. Replace the peas with more potatoes.
- We prefer a thickish gravy. If you want the gravy or sauce to be more liquid, add a bit more water.
