MATAR BATETA NU SHAAK |PEAS POTATO CURRY
mayurisjikoni
Matar Bateta Nu Shaak is a Gujarati style peas and potato curry. A few everyday simple spices and a bit of tomato adds so much flavour to this sabji, shaak or curry. And it is one of the easiest to make, not requiring too many ingredients. No garlic or onion is used for this curry and yet it turns out finger licking good.

- 1½ cups fresh green peas
- 1½ cups potatoes peeled and chopped
- 2 cups water
- ½ cup tomato puree
- 1 tsp oil
- ½ tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp salt
- ⅛ tsp asafoetida
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp dhana jiru
- 1 tsp ginger paste
- ½ to 1 tsp green chill paste
- ¼ to ½ tsp red chilli powder optional
- 1 tsp jaggery powder or brown sugar
- 2 tbsp fresh coriander chopped finely
Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. When it is hot add the mustard and cumin seeds.
When the seeds begin to splutter, add the potatoes and peas.
Add turmeric powder, salt, green chilli and ginger pastes. Mix well.
Cover the pan. Reduce the heat to low. Allow the vegetables to cook for 2-3 minutes.
Add 1 cup water. Cover the pan.
Let the vegetables cook over medium heat till they are done. This usually takes 5 to 10 minutes.
Mash a few potato cubes to make a thicker gravy.
Add the fresh tomato puree, dhana jiru, jaggery and remaining water.
Also add red chilli powder if you are using any.
Mix and let the vegetable simmer for 5 minutes.
Garnish with fresh coriander and serve with roti, poori, paratha or rice.
- If you let the curry cool down a bit, it becomes a bit thick. Can cook ahead and keep.
- Add a handful of coarse peanut or cashew nut powder along with the peas and potatoes. This will give a different taste to the curry and also thicken it.
- The proportion of peas and potatoes used can vary. Add more or less of the peas or potatoes.
- If you want to make a potato curry, follow the same recipe. Replace the peas with more potatoes.
- We prefer a thickish gravy. If you want the gravy or sauce to be more liquid, add a bit more water.
