Avocado Strawberry Salad
Recipe: Avocado Strawberry Salad
Avocado Strawberry Salad with a creamy poppyseed dressing looks so pretty, but trust me, it tastes even better. With crunchy almonds and the saltiness from the feta makes this salad a perfect light meal. Change the cheese, add different kind of nuts, choose your favourite dressing – that is how versatile this salad is.
Sharing Avocado Strawberry Salad Recipe With Sunday Funday Group
February is National Avocado Month. Wendy who blogs at A Day in the Life on the Farm suggested we share a recipe featuring this nutritious superfood. I am a huge fan of avocado and it is always there in my shopping cart. Actually,I was planning on redoing an old post, Avocado Chocolate Pudding. But when I went to our group FB page to add my details, I saw Rebekah too was planning on making it. So as not to duplicate the recipes, I decided to redo another old post, Avocado Strawberry Salad.
This recipe was first posted on 19/07/2013. Updating this post with better write up and photos.

Memories
Good music and food go hand in hand
When I had first written this post, I was listening to a compilation of music by my daughter’s bestie, Lekha. Generally, I listen to Bollywood songs, old and new and if it is Western music then it is Celine Dion, Abba, Bee Gees, etc. Yes I belong to that generation. Lekha, insisted I listen to the songs by Alexandre Desplat, Joshua Radin, Isbells. Surprisingly I really liked the song Elation by Isabells. So uplifting, instantly changed my mood. I didn’t realize that the music score from the movie King’s Speech was so soothing and beautiful. Listening to the music and typing out the post made life pleasant.
Present Time
The weekend from 23rd – 26th Jan 2026 has been really cold due to the snow storms. All because of the polar vortex. In some places the temperatures were -35°C. For us in Magog it has been hovering around -16°C to -23°C. Believe it or not yesterday was a bright sunny day but don’t be fooled by the sun. The temperature outside was -16°C and wind chills makes it even colder. But, my home is warm and cozy. So with the sun out, it didn’t seem odd at all to enjoy a colourful, delish salad. Generally, for me salads are for summer and soups for winter. Having said that one can always bend the rule a bit or do something different. And I so happy I did.

Ingredients Required For Avocado Strawberry Salad & Poppy Seed Dressing
Avocado
One medium ripe but firm avocado. Peel and cut into slices or cubes. Add a bit of lemon juice to it so that it does not turn brown.
Strawberries
I took about 250g of strawberries. Hull and slice them. If they are small, cut them into halves. Medium and large ones can be slices into quarters or more.
Spinach
Baby spinach leaves. I took about 35g. If the leaves are too big, then chop them up roughly. Wash and pat dry them with a kitchen towel.
Red Onion
Need a small onion about 30g. Peel and cut it into thin slices.
Almonds
Toast the almonds and slice them. I bought ready made sliced almonds. We will be using about ¼ cup sliced almonds. Can replace the almonds with pecans or walnuts.
Feta
We will be using about 50g of feta, crumbled. If you don’t like feta, add any other cheese of your choice. I sometimes add mozzarella or brie.
Olive Oil
Need good quality olive oil for the dressing. We will need about ¼ cup of it.
Poppy Seeds
Use either white or black poppy seeds. I decided to use black poppy seeds. We will need about 1 tablespoon.
Mustard Paste
Best is Dijon mustard. A little adds so much flavour. I used about 1 tsp.
Salt
Add according to your taste. Use any salt of your choice, normal table salt, Pink Salt or Sea salt.
Pepper
Freshly cracked peppercorns add so much flavour. We will need ½ tsp freshly cracked or about ¼ tsp pepper powder.
Mayonnaise
Add a little, about 1 tbsp as it makes the salad dressing slightly creamy. This helps the dressing to ‘stick’ to the salad ingredients. Omit if you don’t like mayo.
Vinegar
Use good quality vinegar, can use white wine, apple cider, balsamic vinegar or any you have at hand. If you don’t have vinegar then use fresh lemon juice.
Honey Or Maple Syrup
Add some sweetness to the dressing. Use either honey or maple syrup.

AVOCADO STRAWBERRY SALAD
Ingredients
FOR THE SALAD
- 2 cups baby spinach approximately 35g
- 250 g strawberries
- 1 medium ripe avocado
- 1 small onion, approximately 30g sliced thinly
- ¼ cup almond slices
- 50 g feta
FOR THE POPPY SEED SALAD DRESSING
- ¼ cup olive oil
- 1 tbsp mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- 1 tbsp black poppy seeds
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ tsp pepper coarsely ground
- 1 tsp Dijon Mustard
Instructions
PREPARE THE SALAD
- Wash and dry the spinach leaves with a kitchen towel.
- Hull and cut the strawberries into halves or quarters.
- Peel the avocado and cut it into thick slices or chunks.
- Layer the spinach leaves on a serving dish.
- Toss avocado, strawberries, onion, feta cheese and almond slices in a mixing bowl.
- To prepare the dressing, mix all the ingredients and pour it over the salad.
PREPARE THE POPPY SEED SALAD DRESSING
- Add all the salad dressing ingredients in a cup or a jar.
- Whisk it well if you are using a cup.
- If you are using a jar, close the lid tightly and give the jar a good shake.
TO SERVE
- Either drizzle the dressing over the salad and mix gently or serve it on the side.
Notes
- A good salad to carry for lunch or picnics. Just don't add the dressing. Carry it in a separate container. However, make sure you pour some lemon juice over the cut avocado.
- If you don't get any black poppy seeds, add the white ones or black sesame seeds.
- Omit mayo if you don't like it.
- Add any nuts of your choice.
- Can use mixed salad leaves instead of spinach.
- Add any cheese of your choice. Sometimes I add mozzarella or brie.
- Serves 2 as a meal and 4 as a side dish.

Poppyseed dressing is Frank’s all-time favorite. I think this salad sounds amazing as written but I will add a grilled chicken breast to keep peace in the family LOL.

Thank you so much Karen. It is more beautiful where the walking trails are but for us it is a bit too cold and also too icy. Don’t want to slip and break a leg or hip!

Thank you so much Kalyani. I love the poppy seed dressing. When I don’t have the black ones I use the white poppy seeds.
