Family time I have been away from the blogging scene for nearly a month. I had gone to London for my nephew’s wedding. Weddings are fun but hard work also. It gave me the opportunity to meet up with my huge huge family. Since I stay far away, meeting up with them is a special treat, a special occasion. My eldest son and my daughter in law too came for the wedding. My daughter in law wore a sari for the first and carried it off so beautifully. It seemed like she has been wearing saris like forever! Its amazing how during the pre-wedding, wedding and after wedding celebrations food plays such an important role. We barely use to get breakfast out of the way…

SWEET SQUARES   Almost all the yummy treats or snacks that are available on the Indian Sub continent are fried. Every Indian home you will find jars or tins of these snacks ready anytime. I too love these snacks or farsan as they are called. However they are very high in calories and as a result we have to eat them with caution. However, many a times you will hear people say that 1 – 2 tbsp of the snack does not satisfy them and before they know it they have had a whole bowlful of the snack.  One of the snacks I really like is sakarpara. Sakar means sugar and para is diamond. So its basically diamond shaped sweet dough fried. However, there is…

Many have pointed out that usually personal experience or narration of events may not be good for my website SEO but really, I…

Therefore hara bhara kebabs literally mean kebabs that are full of green vegetables which mainly are peas and spinach. Fresh Coriander and Mint too added for flavoring. What are Kebabs? Usually, the meat pieces are marinated and skewered with vegetable pieces like onion, bell pepper, mushrooms, tomatoes, potatoes to name a few. As for the minced meat ones, spices and flavorings are added to the mince and then shaped on the skewer.…

full of vegetables    The recipe for vegetable handvo has been in my recipe book (followers may recall that all my recipes since I started cooking, are jotted in a big diary given to me by my dad) even before I got married. My friend’s mum use to make this very often as a snack or as a meal. When Padmajha Sureshbabu of Seduce your tastebuds gave me corn and sesame seeds for the shhh cooking secretly challenge, I immediately thought of the vegetable handvo. Obviously there were so many other corn recipes popping up in my mind as I love corn, but I couldn’t miss the opportunity to blog one of my written recipes. Before I proceed to the recipe, I must mention that Padmajha’s…

The more that you read, the more things you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go. Dr. Suess    I cannot claim to be a voracious reader, but I do love reading. I love reading fiction, and usually read books recommended by friends or family. I love reading stories based on true life but am open to reading thrillers, science fiction, romance etc. I tend to read at my own pace, sometimes just a couple of pages sometimes an entire chapter, depends on how interesting I find the story. Stories have a tendency to transport one to another world, re kindle your fantasy, create imagination and above all know a bit more about cultures, the world, different people etc. Recently…

Hard work   Esther, the lady who brings vegetables to our doorsteps daily is a petite woman, but very strong. When she started coming to our building last year, to sell vegetables, she was shy, meek and rarely smiled. As time has gone by she has become more confident, strong, smiles and even jokes with us. She will usually ring my neighbour’s and my door bell at the same time. The minute I greet my neighbour with Jay Shri Krishna, Esther too will respond and immediately tells us not to start our talk as she is getting late. She wants us to buy the vegetables quickly and disappear behind our doors. This morning I wanted to buy some tomatoes and told her that Ksh 100…
