Southern Tomato Sandwich
Recipe: Southern Tomato Sandwich
Southern Tomato Sandwich is the easiest, yummiest, juiciest, softest sandwich. Yes, all the -est you can think of ! Basic white bread, juicy tomato, a bit of mayo, butter and some salt and pepper is all that is required to make this Southern delight.
Southern Cuisine
Must admit I don’t have much exposure to the Southern Cuisine except for grit, cornbread. peach pie, mac and cheese. I think it stops at that. I am too far away from Southern part of US to enjoy the famous cuisine. It actually embraces a wide range of cuisines to create a unique, flavourful food of its own. It is largely based on products available in that region, fresh and wholesome. I had a difficult time deciding what to make. Peaches are not on the scene as yet, so out goes the pie. Discussed with hubby “how about red beans and rice?” He said ” okay make rajma chawal or maharage with rice“. When I explained it would taste a bit different he wasn’t too happy. He is not too big a fan of both grits and cornbread, so that was out. Gumbo is not the same without okra. So cross that one out. I almost didn’t participate for this theme.
Sharing This Southern Tomato Sandwich Recipe Sunday Funday
When I am not travelling or busy, I like to participate in Sunday Funday Group as the themes are exciting. I really didn’t want to miss out on this one. Therefore, continued my research for Southern Cuisine (and love Pinterest for that!). Tumbled upon the Southern Tomato Sandwich and voilà am sharing it with the group. Wendy, thank you for suggesting this interesting theme to celebrate National Country Cooking Month.

What Is Country Cooking?
Country cooking is simple, uses local ingredients, the dishes are hearty and flavourful, fresh as local ingredients are used and many of the recipes are traditional. Southern, French Country and Appalachian cuisines fall under country cooking. India too has its share of traditional country cooking or rather village cooking. But difficult to replicate that in our modern kitchens.

More About Southern Tomato Sandwich
As I mentioned above, I was browsing on Pinterest for Southern Country Cooking Recipes and tumbled upon Southern Tomato Sandwich. Growing up, my mum would make tomato sandwich for us but not the southern style. It was white slices of bread, tomato, salt and pepper. So, I all in for trying out childhood memory sandwich but with mayonnaise included. And wow! Loved it. The juice from the tomato slice mingling with the creamy mayo, running down the side of my hand almost to the arm. The white bread getting a bit stuck to the palate with every bite.
Traditionally the beginning of summer in most Southern homes with gardens is celebrated with tomato sandwiches. Freshly plucked tomatoes from the garden, white bread picked from the shelf part of the supermarket and not the bakery side with popular brand mayo like Hellmann, Duke or Kraft.

Ingredients Required For Southern Tomato Sandwich
Fresh Tomato
The best kind is from your garden, fresh juicy beefsteak variety. Must admit I don’t have a garden and neither does it look like the beginning of summer in Magog. On the contrary it is cold, wet, grey and miserable most days sprinkled with a few sunny days. I got beefsteak tomatoes from our local Farmers Market which takes place every Sunday till Oct.
White Sandwich Bread
For this sandwich don’t go for the bakery white bread, artisanal kind, sourdough, etc. You need the soft white sliced bread from the shelf part of the supermarket. I used the local Quebec brand POM. No need to remove the crust as it is soft.
Mayonnaise
Can be store bought like the Hellmann, Kraft, Duke, etc, or any organic brand. Can use homemade mayo too. The amount required will depend entirely on you. Smear a teaspoonful or a tablespoon. I used Hellmann brand made in Canada. Yes, at the moment Canadians are trying not to buy US brands because of all this tariff war.
Butter
Some use butter, some don’t. I like to smear the slices of bread with butter as it prevents them from getting too soggy because of the juicy tomato slice/slices.
Salt
Sprinkle some according to your taste.
Black Pepper Powder
Sprinkle some on the tomato slice for flavour.

Thank you so much Wendy. If it were not for this theme I probably would not have made tomato mayo sandwich. So I am glad that all these different themes help to learn a bit more about different cuisines and most of the recipes I am able to adapt them.

That looks like the perfect tomato sandwich of my southern childhood, Mayuri! We only made them with homegrown summer tomatoes because the store-bought varieties just didn’t taste the same. Nowadays, since my grandfather’s garden is no longer an option, farmer’s markets selling heirloom tomatoes will have to do.

Thanks Stacy, as I don’t have a garden I had to rely on the Farmer’s Market tomatoes and they are so delicious. Going to enjoy them while the season lasts.

Tomato sandwiches are a tradition where we live. We like garden tomatoes with every meal, even if only slices. But a sandwich makes a meal or snack!

Oh wow, I am going to try this sandwich next time when I want to pack something for kids or just when they are hungry. They like our veggie Mumbai sandwich, and this Southern sandwich with mayo would be a hit as they love mayo.

Thanks Renu, just a bit of advise. If you are going to eat them later on, I would recommend putting the slices in a separate tin. Add the tomato slices just before eating. Otherwise the sandwich gets too soggy.

As I read your description of the tomato sandwich, I realised it is not the same as the butter, salt, pepper, and tomato slices which I am used to. The mayo makes the difference, as you pointed out. I am all excited about the sandwich, and it is dinner with soup today. Thanks.

Thanks Archana, the tomato too makes a load of difference. So do try and get the watery tomatoes.
