Masala Chip Butty
Recipe: Masala Chip Butty
Masala Chip Butty is a version of the popular British street food. It simply is chips or fries served in between two slices of bread. What started off as street food many years has become a popular fast food especially in many of the fish and chips shops. Boom in the number of fish and chips shops also increased the demand for this comfort, cheap and filling food. Butty is the Yorkshire slang for bread and butter.
I had Chip Butty in London, many, many years ago. I remember there use to be a shop around the Harrow Shopping Area where my sister in law and I would stop by to have a chip butty. Shopping would always end with a hearty chip butty. I was totally intrigued when I had it for the first time. It was two buttered slices of bread with fries or chips in between, drizzled with some malt vinegar, a sprinkle of salt and pepper. That became a popular quick snack for my kids and an excellent way to use up leftover chips or fries.
Over time, it has acquired an Indian version considering the number of Indian restaurants, pubs, fast food places that have sprung up over tha past 10 years. Nowadays the chips (fries) are stir fried with some onion, garlic, chillis and tomato ketchup. Then there are variations served with and Indian sauce or curry. And then there are those that are served rolled up in naans and rotis. Dare I say what poutine to any Québécois, chip butty is comfort food for the Brits.
Sharing Masala Chip Butty Recipe With The Group Sunday Funday
I am the host for this Sunday’s theme. I decided on the theme fries or chips. This is what I requested “Fries or Chips as they are called in the UK. Prepare Fries from scratch or include them in a recipe. Chip Butty, Masala Chips, Cheesy Fries, etc. Be creative. Can use potatoes, sweet potatoes or make fries from any veg of your choice”.

We don’t get chip butty in Magog, so I make my own at home. I normally use the thick cut frozen fries which I bake in the oven. But recently, our local supermarket has started stocking frozen masala fries. Though not thick cut, they are a game changer in the overall flavour of the masala chip butty. Whenever I make Indian curry, I save a bit of the sauce or gravy for my masala chip butty. It can be a makhani, tandoori or tikka sauce. I allow the sauce to become really thick, almost dryish. Freeze the sauce and use it whenever I want to make masala chip butty. Also works well with my Garlic and Tomato Chutney.

Ingredients Required For Masala Chip Butty
Chips Or Fries
Make them at home from scratch, buy frozen ones, or use up leftover fries. If possible use thick cut fries. However, any style will do. I have used frozen masala fries which are thin cut. We don’t get thick cut in those.
Bread
Can use 2 thick sandwich bread slices, buns, naans or rotis. Basically any bread of your choice.
Butter
Yes, even though we will be using s sauce, I prefer to butter the bread so that it does not become soggy because of the sauce.
Any Curry Sauce
Can use homemade or ready made sauce. I prefer my homemade makhani or tikka sauce.
Onion
A few slices of onion. Any onion will do, red, white, yellow, raw or pickled. I have used raw red onion slices.
Fresh Coriander
Washed and chopped. Sprinkle some on the chips| fries.

Right before a chip butty as late night post-pub food, chips with curry sauce is on our “favorites” list. Combine those two for a masala chip butty and I know this is going to be up high on our list as well!

Stacy my brother told me that some pubs do make the chip butty with the authentic curry sauce that fish shops usually have. Hoping that I will get the opportunity to try out during my next visit to London.

That looks absolutely scrumptious! I did not know about butties but I have tucked fries into my hamburgers ever since childhood, so I know I would like this. Carbs on carbs and so worth it! But I really love adding the crunch of the red onion in there. Seriously, this looks so good, I want one. Now.
