Tasty Vegan Tofu Steak with Stir-Fried Vegetables
Indulge in a simple yet protein-rich and delightful dish by trying out Tofu Steak with stir-fried vegetables. The flavorful sauce transforms plain tofu into a delectable treat, creating a satisfying and nutritious meal when combined with fresh vegetables. I admit I don’t have a grill pan as yet in my kitchen but that does not stop me from making this scrumptious meal.
I have made this meal with two different sauces, chilli garlic sauce and orange sauce. You may wonder if the flavours clash, but believe me they don’t. Every time I make tofu steaks the sauce changes. Sometimes I will use orange sauce for both the tofu and vegetables and sometimes it will be the chilli garlic sauce. I’ve used sweet and sour sauce that the result is delish. So basically use any sauce of your choice.
Tofu And Me
The first time I tasted tofu was at the Overseas Chinese Restaurant in Mombasa. It the oldest Chinese Restaurant in Mombasa, established on 1968. Hubby to be took me there for a meal when I was visiting Mombasa before our marriage. Their vegetarian meal was limited and one of the dishes was tofu with stir fry vegetables. Had to ask the restaurant owner what tofu was and he obliged. He then suggested I try the dish and if I didn’t like it he would replace it with another vegetarian dish at no extra cost. I was all in for tasting tofu. Loved it. When we got married, I’d want to go to Overseas Chinese Restaurant for the tofu. Back then it was not available in the supermarkets in Mombasa.
Tofu Dishes
I actually decided to try cooking with tofu when I was in India as tofu is readily available. Now, in Magog, it is unbelievable the choice of tofu I get, soft, medium, firm and so many different brands. Check out how I include Tofu in my diet.
Sharing Vegan Tofu Steak Recipe With Sunday Funday Group
This weekend we are sharing vegan main meal dishes as suggested by Amy. We are a group of food bloggers who share a recipe every Sunday based on a theme suggested by members.
What Is Veganism
Veganism is a diet where no animal products are consumed. This includes, meat, seafood, dairy products. Many Indian dishes tend to be vegan. Some dishes ghee which is clarified butter is added. However, that can easily be replaced with oil.

Ingredients Required For Vegan Tofu Steak
Tofu
Best to use firm tofu for this recipe. Wrap the tofu with kitchen paper towel, place something heavy on it so all the extra water comes out. Leave it like that for 15 minutes. A mortar and pestle is a good option or a heavy pan or stone/brick. I have used about 250g in total for 2. How much tofu per serving to use is entirely up to you. Also I have not cooked the tofu till it becomes crispy as the tofu tends to become chewy. Use a griddle pan if you to get those beautiful dark lines on the tofu steak.
Oil
I have used a mixture of sunflower and sesame oil for the Chilli Garlic Sauce. Have used only sunflower oil for the stir fry.
Maple Syrup and Demerara Sugar
Maple Syrup is a good vegan sweetener option. Another option is unrefined brown sugar or demerara sugar.
Tomato Puree
Fresh tomato puree should be thick. Can use passata or canned pureed tomato.
Chilli Sauce
Any ready made chilli sauce of your choice. Or use Schezwan Sauce.
Soy Sauce
Make sure the soy sauce does not contain fish or meat flavourings. Will need for the Chilli Garlic and Orange Sauce.
Garlic And Garlic Powder
Need fresh sliced garlic for the stir fry vegetables. Some minced garlic for the orange sauce. Garlic powder is for the Chilli Garlic Sauce.
Smoked Paprika
I add a bit of smoked paprika for the reddish colour and also for the smoked flavour.
Salt
Add according to your taste to the sauces and stir fry.
Black Pepper
Coarsely ground pepper for the Garlic Chilli Sauce and
Fresh Orange Juice And Zest
Before you squeeze the oranges for the juice, zest it for the peel. Will be adding some to the Orange Sauce. Squeeze fresh oranges for the orange sauce. I haven’t tried making the sauce with carton orange juice.
Rice Vinegar
Required for the orange sauce.
Chilli Flakes
Required for orange sauce to give a subtle hotness. Can omit it if you wish.
Cornstarch | Cornflour
Required to thicken the Orange Sauce.
Vegetables For The Stir Fry
Choose vegetables of your preference. I have used carrot, mushrooms, snow peas, cauliflower, onion, green beans, zucchini and spring onions. You can add broccoli, baby corn, sweet peppers, napa cabbage, leek, etc.

FOR THE ORANGE SAUCE
- 1 cup fresh orange juice
- 1 tbsp orange zest
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 2-3 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- ½ cup demerara sugar
- 1 tbsp ginger minced
- 1 tbsp garlic minced

FOR THE STIR FRY VEGETABLES

- 1 medium carrot peel and cut into sticks
- 100 g cauliflower cut into small florets
- 100 g green beans cut into 1½ inch pieces
- 100 g snowpeas trim ends, cut into halves
- 150 g mushrooms slice them
- 1 medium onion peel and cut into strips or chunks
- ¼ cup spring onion chopped
- 2-3 cloves garlic sliced
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- ½ tsp salt
Instructions
PREPARATION OF CHILLI GARLIC SAUCE | MARINADE SAUCE
- Mix all the ingredients for the marinade in a bowl or glass container with a lid.
- Add the tofu slab to it. Coat with the sauce.
- Close the container with the lid and allow the tofu to marinade in the sauce for 30 minutes or more.
- I prefer to leave it overnight in the fridge.
PREPARATION OF THE ORANGE SAUCE
- Prepare the cornstarch or cornflour slurry first. Mix the cornflour and water.
- Add orange juice, sugar, vinegar, orange zest, minced ginger and garlic, soy sauce in a pan.
- Heat the pan over medium heat. Stir the mixture and allow it to come to a gentle boil.
- Add the cornstarch slurry slowly, stirring the orange sauce mixture continuously.
- Keep on stirring the sauce till it becomes thick.
- Allow it to come to a gentle boil. Add chilli flakes if you are using it. Mix well.
- Take the pan off the heat. The orange sauce is ready.
PREPARATION OF THE STIR FRY VEGETABLES
- Add both the oils in a wide pan or wok over medium to high heat.
- Add the chopped onion and stir fry for 2-3 minutes till it appears a bit soft.
- Add the sliced garlic and stir fry for a minute.
- Add the green beans and stir fry for 2 minutes.
- Add carrot, cauliflower and snow peas. Stir fry for 2 minutes.
- Add zucchini and mushrooms. Stir fry for a minute.
- Cover the pan with a lid and allow the vegetables to 'sweat' for 2 minutes.
- Add salt and pepper powder. Give it a good mix. Cover the pan again.
- Allow the vegetables to cook for 2-3 minutes. Check the green bean, it should not be raw and at the same time should not be over cooked.
- Take the pan off the heat.
PAN FRY THE TOFU STEAK
- Heat a wide pan over high heat. If you have a griddle pan use that.
- Add the marinated tofu along with the sauce.
- Allow the tofu to become a bit crisp on both sides.
- Make as crisp as you prefer but don't burn the marinade.
HOW TO SERVE TOFU STEAKS
- Divide the stir fry vegetables between two plates.
- Pour some orange sauce over the vegetables.
- Divide the tofu steak into two pieces.
- Place one tofu steak in each plate.
- Spoon any remaining sauce over the tofu steaks.
- Garnish with some chopped spring onion and serve immediately.
- Serve some orange sauce on the side.
Notes
- Can use either the chilli garlic sauce or orange sauce for both the tofu and vegetables.
- Use vegetables of your choice like broccoli, sweet pepper, napa cabbage, bamboo shoot, leek, etc.
- Can serve the tofu steaks with vegetable stir fry rice, noodles, quinoa, etc.
- Can replace demerara sugar with maple syrup if you want to.
- I have added ready made chilli sauce to the chilli garlic sauce. You can add schezwan sauce, sriracha sauce, any chilli sauce of your choice.
