Recipe: Chocolate Coated Banana
Chocolate Coated Banana is a fun, easy to make, healthy treat and so delicious. This is one dessert little helpers will have fun making during summer. Cut the banana into bite size pieces or cut them into halves. Whichever you prefer. If you dip half cut bananas in the melted chocolate then you will need to insert a popsicle stick.
Memories
I’d not tasted chocolate coated bananas before. Had the opportunity to taste it for the first time during one of my trips to Montreal years ago. During a hot summer day my son decided to take us to the Old Port area. It was bustling with people, many food trucks were around selling food, and stalls selling hats, sunglasses, souvenirs, etc. While most of the Canadians and tourists were enjoying the sweltering sun, I was looking for some place to sit under the shade. I cannot bear really hot weather. It just zaps all my energy and I feel so sluggish.
I finally found a place under a tree and right in front of me was a food truck selling chocolate dipped frozen bananas. Never had it before. The foodie in me got the better of me and I waited in the sun patiently for my turn. The wait was worth it. It was so cooling, healthy, filling and delicious.
When I got back to Mombasa, I made them for my neighbour’s kids and they loved them. I posted the recipe on 19/02/2018. Republishing it with better write up and photos on 27/08/2023.
Customize To Your Liking
What I like about this recipe is that you have many different options. Use milk or dark chocolate. Sprinkle any topping of your choice. Kids love sprinkles, crushed M&M. Most adults reach out for ones topped with nuts, cacao or coconut. Add nut butter like almond or peanut butter is optional. Leave the coated banana in the freezer or enjoy them immediately.Often I make the bite size ones as that takes care of our chocolate or dessert craving.
Sharing This Recipe With Sunday Funday Group
It is National Banana Lovers Day on 27th Aug. Different from the National Banana Day but seriously who cares as long as we get to enjoy bananas. I for one cannot image starting my day without a banana. Yes, that is what I have every day. Growing up that is what we would have for breakfast, banana and a glass of milk. Stacy who blogs at Food Lust People Love suggested we share a sweet or savoury dish using banana. We could also include plantain. I have so many recipes on my blog using banana. I never throw out those over ripe bananas. There always is a way to put them to good use.

Ingredients Required For Chocolate Coated Banana
Banana – Make sure they are not over ripe or raw. Peel the banana. Cut into bite size pieces or cut into thirds or halves, depending on the size of the banana.
Chocolate – use milk, dark or mixed. Any good quality chocolate will do. Melt it over hot water or in the microwave oven. To melt it over hot water, take a small pan of hot water. Place a heat proof bowl over it. It should not touch the water. Add chocolate pieces. The heat from the hot water will help to melt the chocolate. Don’t forget to mix it. I prefer to use the microwave oven as it is so much easier. Put the chocolate pieces in a microwave friendly bowl. For me 40 seconds is enough to melt the chocolate.
Nut Butter – any nut butter of your choice. I love the combined flavour of banana and peanut butter. So I used that. This is an optional ingredient.
Toppings – use whatever you prefer. I have used sprinkles (funfetti), desiccated coconut and chopped pecans. You can use chocolate sprinkles, cacao, chopped dried fruit, etc

CHOCOLATE COATED BANANA

- ½ cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 tsp pecans chopped
- 1 tsp sprinkles |funfetti
- 1 tsp desiccated coconut
Instructions
- Peel and cut the banana into bite size pieces. Depending on the size of the banana you will get 8-9 pieces.
- Line a tray with parchment paper. Place the banana pieces on it.
- Top each slice with some peanut butter. Don't pile too much. Just about ¼ tsp or less. Level it out with a knife.
- Put the tray in the freezer for 15 minutes. This will make the banana slices cold.
- In the meantime melt the chocolate. Melt it in a bowl over hot water or in the microwave oven.
- Using a fork dip the cold banana pieces in the melted chocolate.
- Top the coated banana pieces with the topping.
- Put the chocolate coated banana pieces in the fridge for a bit.
- Enjoy. Alternately, put them in the freezer and enjoy them as frozen dessert.
Notes
- Don't use over ripe bananas.
- If the melted chocolate sets a bit, melt it again.
- Don't leave frozen banana out at room temperature. They will taste all soft and mushy.
- Cut the banana into halves or thirds. Dip only half of the piece and coat.
