Food For Thought
Yesterday, I was with a group of women and one of them commented that not all fruits can be included in a salad. I chose to differ as I can make any fruit into a salad. Also the proof is above that any vegetable or fruit can be added to a salad. This started a discussion where someone pointed out that if any tropical fruit we get commonly in Kenya were to feature in a salad served by a posh restuarant here or abroad, we would happily order it, eat it, pay a hefty price for it and shower a million praises. So why can’t we include whichever fruit we have at home in our salad dish?
Memories …
Since the age of 7 or 8, I remember helping my mum in the kitchen. It was my duty to wash, peel and chop the salad ingredients. Back then the everyday salad was simple, a mixture of tomato, carrots, cucumber and lettuce. Fuss free and without any dressing. As I delved into magazines and food books. my adventure with different ingredients began. Saturdays was the day I would make different types of salads for my family.
Grapefruit or Pomelo?
Are they both the same? Not really, though both belong are citrus fruits the similarity ends there. Pomelos originate from Thailand and Malaysia and are biggest citrus fruits. Pomelos can be sweet to slightly tangy to slightly bitter. Ranging from yellow, pale pink to ruby pink the segments are difficult to get to as the pomelo has a very thick rind and white pith. Its also known as pummelo, Chinese Grapefruit or Shaddock.
Nutritional Benefits of Pomelo
- It’s a rich source of Vitamin C, each fruit containing 600% of your daily requirement.
- High content of fiber means that its very good for the digestive system.
- Pomelo is a good source of potassium which is an essential mineral to help in regulating our blood pressure.
- Helps in weight loss well at least that’s the belief as it contains fat burning enzyme carnitine palmitoyl transferase.
- Adequate levels of potassium in pomelo means that when we consume it, it helps to prevent muscle cramps and stiffness.
- Pomelos have anti aging minerals, so go on enjoy the fruit.
