Recipe: Baked Falafel Bowl
Baked Falafel Bowl is delicious, filling and healthy meal. Instead of deep frying falafel, I bake them and serve it with salad ingredients, hummus, tzatziki and baked pita chips.
Why Bake Them?
The first time I baked them was when I wanted a meal that is healthy, filling and didn’t involve deep frying. Mombasa weather can be stifling hot and the last thing we feel like eating is curries, dals, rice and parathas. So bowl meals become the best option. To keep the bowl healthy, I opted to bake the falafel. The first time I baked the falafel my family loved them. So I always opt for baking over deep frying.
If you want to deep fry them, go ahead.
Memories
Some years ago dining experience in Mombasa was limited to certain types of cuisine. It was either local street food, Indian, Chinese or Italian. My first ever bowl meal in Dubai at the food court of Emirates Mall was a falafel bowl. The bowl bursting with flavours totally floored me and was intrigued by the whole concept. And no regrets at all. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal. In fact for the 7 days I stayed in Dubai 4 times my meal was falafel bowl. Had to recreate the wholesome meal at home for hubby to enjoy.

Sometimes I buy the ready made falafel from the local Lebanese Take Away place. Truthfully, it is one of the few eateries in Magog that I like. Most have almost no or just one vegetarian option. The other places I love is Alessa (Italian) and La Piazetta. have yet to enjoy a meal at Koz and Pinocchio. I so want to try out their mushroom risotto.
What is Falafel?
Falafel Bowl Options
- As the name suggests you really do need falafel to be the star ingredient of this bowl.
- Sometimes I replace pita bread with cooked rice, quinoa, couscous or pot barley.
- Salad ingredients can be whatever you have at hand. Sometimes I add boiled beetroot, stir fried cauliflower, cooked pumpkin, etc.
- Salad Greens – add whatever you like.. mixed, arugula, lettuce, spinach, etc.
- Sauces – tastes really good with hummus and tzatziki or tahini. Thick plain yogurt too is a good option.
