Apple Picking At Vergers & Cidrerie Denis Charbonneau
Sunday 19th September
The previous day my son asked us to be ready by 9a.m. as his girlfriend and he had planned a surprise trip for us. When we got ready, it was a bit chilly so we dressed accordingly.
We sat in the car and kept on guessing where they were taking us to. As we got nearer to the venue, road signs for Mont Saint Gregoire appeared and we thought we probably were going for a hike.
Then we saw orchards and for me that was a first, seeing so many apple trees all in a row till the eyes can see. We got to a parking area and saw so many people either leaving the orchards with bags of apples or entering.
We’re Going To Pick Apples
What a surprise when my son said we’re going apple picking. I was like a small kid, couldn’t contain my excitement. It was many years ago I had gone raspberry picking with my family in London.
Yummiest Apple Beignets
As we approached the reception area, the air was filled with the aroma of apples and cinnamon. Yes those hot sweet and crispy beignets were very tempting. Before we set off for apple picking, gorged on them.
Entrance Fee
Buy a large bag for CAD 20, that is the entrance fee. We decided that one bagful would be enough for us.
Vergers & Cidrerie Denis Charbonneau
Vergers is the French word for Orchards and Cidrerie for Cidery. Yes, with those huge amounts and varieties of apples, making cider is the most obvious thing. This orchard has 28,000 + apple trees and 15+ varieties of apples.
A small tractor trailer drops off the visitors at various points of the orchard. From there we could walk around, pick apples to fill the bag and eat as many apples as we wanted. There were some varieties I tasted for the first time like gingergold and honeycrisp. We picked quite a few varieties – gingergold, honeycrisp, gala, Mcintosh.
Twist and Pluck
How do you know that the apple is ready to be picked? Simply twist the apple gently and pull. If it is ready, you can pluck it easily. If not, leave it on the tree. Ladders were placed at various points so that we could climb and reach out for the apples at the top of the tree.
The Cidrerie
With our belly and bag full of various varieties of apples, we decided to visit the cidrerie. Quite confusing which one to buy. To solve that problem, you’re allowed to taste them all from tiny sippy cups. We bought a bottle of Raspberry Flavoured Cider Apertif.
So Many Apples, what to do?
We shared out the apples, my half was still quite a lot of apples. So many recipes came to mind, some new some to redo with new photos but the AirBnB kitchen placed a lot of limitations. I would have loved to bake an apple pie and make apple beignets. Well, apple season is here throughout Fall so will bake it soon. The new AirBnB kitchen in Magog is so much better equipped. I used the apples to make some jam, a pickle and a soup. Recipes for the soup and pickle will be up on the blog soon.

Apple Ginger & Turmeric Jam
Usually whenever anyone goes for fruit picking, the most obvious thing to prepare is jam. Wasn’t sure how this jam would turn out so made a small batch.
Apple naturally is packed with pectin which is a soluble dietary fibre. Making this jam was so easy, as it thickened pretty fast. No need to add any pectin.
Ingredients Required For Apple Ginger & Turmeric Jam
- Apples – I used a mixture of honeycrisp and gingergold. Use any apples of your choice. Make sure you peel and core the apples. Also, chop them finely if you don’t want to puree the mixture. Secondly, make sure you coat the chopped apples with lemon juice so that they don’t turn brown.
- Lemon Juice – fresh.
- Ginger – fresh ginger, peeled and finely chopped or grated
- Sugar – I used normal white sugar. I used only one cup of sugar but you can add extra if you prefer a very sweet jam.
- Turmeric Powder – optional. I like the flavour it adds and also changes the colour of the jam.

APPLE GINGER & TURMERIC JAM
Ingredients
- 3 large apples or 5 medium ones
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp fresh ginger grated or finely chopped
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
Instructions
PREPARE THE APPLES
- Peel and core the apples. Chop them finely.
- Add lemon juice to the chopped apples and keep mixing it as you add more chopped apples.
PREPARE THE GINGER
- Wash and peel the ginger. Either chop it finely or grate it.
PREPARE THE JAM
- Add chopped apples, ginger and sugar in a heavy bottom pan.
- Put the pan over medium heat and mix well.
- Soon, the apples will release water and the sugar will melt.
- Lower the heat to a simmer.
- Keep stirring the mixture frequently so that the mixture does not stick to the bottom of the pan.
- Simmer the mixture for 30 - 40 minutes till it becomes thick.
- Add turmeric powder. Mix well. Check the notes section on how to check if the jam is done. There were no watery bubbles so that was an indication that the jam is done.
- Bottle the hot jam into sterilized jars.
- Enjoy home made jam with your favourite toast or mix it with plain yogurt.
- The jam stays at room temperature for about a month, if it lasts that long. However, I prefer to keep it in the fridge.
Notes
* Add a small blob of the jam.
* Put the plate or saucer in the freezer again for 1-2 minutes.
* Touch the jam, it should be thick like gel and also when pushed with your finger, it should wrinkle.
- Add ¼ cup more sugar if you prefer a sweet jam.
- wash and dry the jars.
- Switch on the oven to 100°C.
- Place the jars on the baking tray and allow to sterilize for 20 minutes before using.
