Contributing this recipe to the Group called Foodies_Redoing Old Posts which is Renu’s baby. This group encourages food bloggers to visit their old forgotten posts and breathe a new life into them either by changing the photos, the write up or both. However, the recipes remain the same. What is Ghee Kera?
Kera. keda, is the Gujarati word for bananas and in Hindi its called kela. Ghee is clarified butter. Ghee is a popular fat, made by heating butter till the milk solids and liquid fat get separated. Its usually made using cow milk butter. Ghee is used in a variety of dishes in India to add not only flavour but also health benefits. Ghee Kera is a mixture of banana slices, a bit of ghee and sugar. Sometimes cardamom powder is added for more flavour.
Gujarati Proverb
‘Ena Ghar Ma Ghee Kera chhe’ which when translated says that in his/her house there is ghee kera. In fact it means that he or she is pretty much well off, wealth wise. Ghee years ago was considered as an expensive food item, only people who owned cows for milk or wealth had the luxury of including it in their diet on a daily basis.
Ghee Kera and my memories
When I was growing up, Saturday would be the day of the week that along with the usual full lunch of dal (lentils), shaak(vegetables), rotli and bhaat(rice), we would have some sweet dish like shrikhand, lapsi, meethi sev or ghee kera. Whenever my siblings and I didn’t like the vegetable prepared to go with our rotli (wheat flatbread), my mum would give us ghee kera. And the best part is yet to come, The bowl in which she would prepare Ghee Kera, after its over, she would hot kadhi to it, give it a swirl and I’d enjoy that kadhi, sipping on it slowly, not wanting it to get over. Sweetness from the sugar and the ghee aroma, so heavenly.
Ghee Kera and My Kids
When my kids were growing up, I would give them ghee kera often with roti but on the condition that they would also eat the vegetable we had made. And thus this way a family tradition continued, my daughter asking for ‘banana nu shaak'(banana vegetable) often. What she really meant was ghee kera. Now an adult, she still calls it banana nu shaak.
An easy dessert option:
Did you know that ghee kera is a quick dessert to prepare when you have a crazy craving for something sweet? It tastes really awesome on its own too. One of the easiest recipe to make, its vital that bananas are not raw or too ripe. Besides aroma the ghee should be of good quality. Easily available in Indian stores, its worth spending a bit more and buying a well known quality. Sometimes the ghee is mixed with oil. Usually I make ghee at home, but occasionally when I need to buy then KCC or Brookside brand is the best in Kenya.
