HEALTH BENEFITS OF GINGER & LEMONGRASS TEA

Enjoying at least one cup or mug of Ginger & Lemongrass Tea a day has many health benefits:

WHAT IS GINGER?

Ginger is not a new ingredient for me as it is widely used in the Indian Cuisine. In fact I use it on a daily basis in my curries, dals, pulaos, some flatbreads and even tea. I don’t like drinking plain tea. So, I tend to add fresh ginger or Tea Masala. In fact even the tea masala has ginger powder along with other spices.

Ginger is a flowering plant which originally was grown in South East Asia but is now grown world over. Belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, it is a close relative of Turmeric. It is the root or rhizome of this flowering plant that is commonly used.

Traditionally, ginger root was and still is used as a medicinal remedy for stomach ailments, right from cramps to bad tummy bugs.

Ginger can be consumed fresh or in the powder form. Nowadays dried ginger powder tablets too are available. Ginger is a common spice used world over in various desserts and savory dishes.

THEME: GORGEOUS GINGER

This exciting theme, was suggested by Kalyani who blogs at Sizzling Tastebuds. In fact, as Indians we need no introduction to this essential ingredient. As I love fresh ginger tea, it was time that I had the recipe on my blog. And the opportunity arose when Kalyani suggested this theme.

SOME SUGGESTIONS HOW TO MAKE DIFFERENT TYPES OF GINGER TEA

Today I have shared the typical Indian style Ginger Tea recipe which is commonly known as Adrak Chai. Usually, Adrak or Ginger Chai is enjoyed with a hot snack at teatime.

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED FOR GINGER & LEMONGRASS TEA

Fresh Water – from the tap or bottled

Milk – dairy or any nut milk

Fresh Ginger – peeled and minced or grated. If you don’t have fresh ginger, use powdered but the taste will be a bit different.

Lemongrass – preferably fresh. However, can use the powder. Or replace it with fresh mint or Tulsi (Holy Basil).

Sugar – any of your choice. I like to use brown sugar or honey. For a vegan version can use maple syrup.

Tea Leaves – Generally when I make spicy tea, I prefer using loose tea leaves. However, when not available, I add tea bags. Can replace black tea with green tea.
