Wash the dal in water 3-4 times.
Soak the dal in 1 cup warm water for half an hour.
Heat oil in a wide pan over medium heat.
When it is hot, add mustard and cumin seeds.
When the seeds begin to sizzle, add asafoetida, turmeric powder, ginger and green chilli pastes.
Stir fry for a few seconds.
Add and the dal with the water, slowly.
Add salt and mix well.
Cover the pan and reduce the heat to low.
Cook the lentils till done. This will take about 7 to 10 minutes.
When done, remove from the pan from the heat. Add the dhana jiru and red chilli powder.
Add fresh coriander.
Serve hot with rice and kadhi.
