Dark Chocolate Orange Shortbread are a chocolate lover's delight. Chocolatey with orange flavour, these cookies are ideal for Christmas. Gift them, serve them or enjoy them with your family.

  • 2 cups plain flour all purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa
  • ½ cup sugar + 2tbsp
  • 200 g soft butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp orange zest
  • 2 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • For decoration:
  • sugar granules or sprinkles or chopped nuts


  • Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  • Grease baking trays lightly with some butter.
  • Mix sugar and orange zest together. Rub the zest into the sugar to release the essential oils.
  • Sieve flour cocoa and salt together.
  • Cream butter and sugar together till its creamy and fluffy.
  • Add vanilla extract and orange juice.
  • Mix well.
  • Add the flour mixture and form a dough.
  • Roll the dough to about a ¼" thickness using a cling film or parchment paper.
  • Put the rolled dough in the fridge for 30 mins to chill.
  • Cut the cookies into any shape you desire.
  • Place the cookies on the prepared tray.
  • Sprinkle with sugar, sprinkles or nuts.
  • Bake for 12 -15 minutes or until edges become crisp.
  • Remove the cookies from the oven. Allow them to rest on the sheet for 3-5 minutes.
  • Remove the cookies from the sheet and  let them cool on a wire rack.
  • Store in an airtight container.


If the dough gets too hard add 1-2 tbsp of milk or orange juice.
Can drizzle the cookies with white glace icing or melted white chocolate.
Make the dough ahead and leave it wrapped in a cling film in the fridge till you are ready to bake the cookies.
