Apple Ginger & Turmeric Jam is very easy to make and delicious. This home made apple jam with a bit of fresh ginger and turmeric has no artificial colouring or preservatives.
Add lemon juice to the chopped apples and keep mixing it as you add more chopped apples.
PREPARE THE GINGER
Wash and peel the ginger. Either chop it finely or grate it.
PREPARE THE JAM
Add chopped apples, ginger and sugar in a heavy bottom pan.
Put the pan over medium heat and mix well.
Soon, the apples will release water and the sugar will melt.
Lower the heat to a simmer.
Keep stirring the mixture frequently so that the mixture does not stick to the bottom of the pan.
Simmer the mixture for 30 - 40 minutes till it becomes thick.
Add turmeric powder. Mix well. Check the notes section on how to check if the jam is done. There were no watery bubbles so that was an indication that the jam is done.
Bottle the hot jam into sterilized jars.
Enjoy home made jam with your favourite toast or mix it with plain yogurt.
The jam stays at room temperature for about a month, if it lasts that long. However, I prefer to keep it in the fridge.
Notes
JAM DONENESS TEST* Put a small plate or saucer in the freezer for 5-10 minutes. * Add a small blob of the jam. * Put the plate or saucer in the freezer again for 1-2 minutes. * Touch the jam, it should be thick like gel and also when pushed with your finger, it should wrinkle.
Add ¼ cup more sugar if you prefer a sweet jam.
How To Sterilize Jars:
wash and dry the jars.
Switch on the oven to 100°C.
Place the jars on the baking tray and allow to sterilize for 20 minutes before using.
