EVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME: #170 DETOX RECIPE After all the Diwali fried snacks, sweets, desserts, heavy meals, its time to give the tummy a rest and give it a good detox. Just the right theme at the right time, well thought out by Kriti who blogs at  Krispy Kadhai. So what’s all this hype about detox water, detox soup, detox salad, detox meals, detox smoothies etc, etc. etc? Well, basically its more of a marketing tactic. None of them contain any magic formula or chemical to miraculously detox the body in a matter of 1 or 3 days. Our body is designed to detox regularly, meaning getting rid of toxins on a daily basis. For that to happen our liver and kidneys have to work perfectly.…

  • Black Bean and Corn Salad with Avocado Dressing

    May 16, 2018mayurisjikoni

There was a time when I was sticking to soups and salads only for dinner and that was going pretty well for a long time. However, the disheartening thing was that I was not losing any weight. Light dinners felt good as tummy was not bloated, didn’t feel lethargic and generally felt good that I was eating something healthy. I really should get back to that routine and yes have realized that counting calories is as important as exercising. No diet promises the easy way out. It’s after a long time I’m posting a salad recipe today. A few weeks ago, making salads with greens was not possible as it was difficult getting greens. Now that the rains have begun, its possible to find extra…

Where are the RAINS?    Today my brain is all foggy and I can barely keep my eyes open. Last night was an uncomfortable hot night. The AC was on but I still felt hot. Its probably around 4a.m. that I fell asleep and got up at 8  a.m.! That meant it was like a mad rush getting lunch ready, getting the washing machine started and all the usual chores before 10a.m. when the water disappears from the taps. I didn’t manage to beat the clock, some chores are left and will have to tackle them after 4 when the water returns.     Many parts of Kenya have rainfall to the extend that floods are closing down roads, bridges and some places are impossible to…

Recipe Swap 3    Food Bloggers Recipe Swap is a group of food bloggers who prepare a dish from a blogger’s blog. The group initiator Amber pairs up the participants. We then decide what we want to make from our partner’s blog. Usually we add a slight twist of our own or cook it the way we like but the main ingredients remain the same. At the end of the month we share our recipe link on the FB page.    For the month of March, I was paired with a new member Sapana. Though she is new to the group, I’ve known Sapana for a couple of years through another blogging group. Since I’ve been following her blog for a couple of  years, I…

  • 661. Pasta with Parsley Walnut Pesto

Ideal Workplace lunch Theme: Healthy Weekday Lunches BM#77 Week 4 Day 2 During my visits to Bangalore, I’ve prepared healthy and filling salads for my daughter to carry to work. She doesn’t like me adding fruit to the salad. The salads have to be filling and yet not too heavy. Pasta salad is one of the salads I prepare just not for her but also for myself. Hot days usually means salads for lunch. I pack the dressing separately so that the salad stays crispy and one can choose the amount of dressing they want to add to the salad. This parsley and walnut pesto tasted so amazing. Since it was a simple salad, the star is the pesto sauce. Initially I thought that the…

Where is my dahi?     Dahi is the hindi/gujarati word for yogurt. When my kids were growing up, yogurt was a part of their meal every single day. Plain yogurt or made into lassi but mostly good old plain home made yogurt . Dollops of the thick creamy goodness was eaten with dals, rice, khichdi and vegetable curry. If anything was slightly chilli for the kids a dollop of yogurt took care of it. While the boys were not too fussed about yogurt or lassi, my daughter on the other hand would throw a tantrum if she didn’t have her bowl of yogurt for lunch. She’d cry out “where is my dahi?” if we didn’t serve it with her lunch.    As you may have guessed…

    February 27, 2017mayurisjikoni

Blank mind    Today is one of those days when I have no idea what I want to write about. Usually before I go into the recipe, I have something to write about, family events, news, thoughts etc. There is a lot happening in this world but I have no inclination to write about it.        So today I’ll just straight go to the recipe. #FoodieMonday #Bloghop team decided on a hot or cold rice recipe as our 81st theme. Taking rice as the main ingredient, we were suppose to make a piping hot dish or a cold dish. I didn’t want to make anything piping hot as its just too hot here in Mombasa. So for cold I had options of kheer, phirni,…

Satvik Food According to the Ayurveda(Indian traditional medicine), food is divided into 3 main groups, Satvik (Satvic), Tamasic and Rajasic. Food not only nourishes the body but affects the mind too. In this fast paced world our food is not only loaded with chemicals through fertilizers, canning, processing but we tend to overindulge in fast foods that are bad for our body, mind and health. We all get tempted by cheesy pizzas, delish bakes, silky chocolates. Satvik foods are smooth, savory, easy to digest, light and fresh. Satvik foods encourage mental clarity, good health and peace.Foods belonging to this group are rich in Prana(life force). Foods included in this category are basically lacto vegetarian foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh diary products, grains and pulses, natural…

Summer Treat When the Shhh Cooking Secretly Group decided on the theme Summer Treats at the beginning of June, it was pretty hot, not only in the Indian Sub Continent but also in Mombasa. A few days later and the weather changed. I hear its raining in many parts of India, France was flooded and though we don’t have any rain, its become a little cooler here. My partner Anu Kollon, blogger at Ente Thattukada gave me orange and cucumber as my secret ingredients.Check out her blog for some lovely Kerala dishes. The options with those two ingredients were to make a smoothie, ice lolly or a healthy salad. I decided to make the latter. I served the salad for dinner with home made flat bread.…

Floods everywhere These days the news is mostly on the floods in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya and how people are getting to work and back home. Traffic delays, flooded main roads, water in homes, power station shut down because it gets flooded, resulting in some areas going without power for hours or even days. Everyone is busy blaming the County. While that is true that the county did not prepare for the rains by cleaning out the drainage, its our fault too. Rubbish which includes plastic bags, plastic bottles, paper, cigarette boxes, food packages etc are all thrown mindlessly on the roads and the roadside. So many times I have seen hawkers leaving dirty and used plastic bags on the roadside, people having…
