EVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME: #151 CORN The whole of today was spent indoor as right now Montreal is going through a heatwave. We thought that the night time would be cooler so went for a long walk with hubby. However, the heat was unbearable. The last time I experienced a blast of hot air like this was years ago when I first went to Amdavad before I joined school in Mt.Abu. Mombasa is a hot and humid place but we don’t get dry hot air. Tomorrow too is going to be hot and people have been advised to drink lots of water. Luckily the football matches for the World Cup are going on so for better half of the day watched the matches. I cannot sit…

  • Black Bean and Corn Salad with Avocado Dressing

    May 16, 2018mayurisjikoni

There was a time when I was sticking to soups and salads only for dinner and that was going pretty well for a long time. However, the disheartening thing was that I was not losing any weight. Light dinners felt good as tummy was not bloated, didn’t feel lethargic and generally felt good that I was eating something healthy. I really should get back to that routine and yes have realized that counting calories is as important as exercising. No diet promises the easy way out. It’s after a long time I’m posting a salad recipe today. A few weeks ago, making salads with greens was not possible as it was difficult getting greens. Now that the rains have begun, its possible to find extra…

Sun, Sand and Sea    For the past couple of days I’ve been spending some relaxing and fun time with my family at Watamu. Watamu is a small coastal town just outside Malindi. We’re here to celebrate my aunt’s(foi, bua) 90th birthday which is today. Yes, you read right, 90th. I decided to treat all my 3 aunts to a foot and arm massage at the spa run by Medina Palms. As I was filling in the form of questionnaires for her, when I came to the part of if she’s taking any medication, she says very sadly ‘ yes, the doctor has prescribed Vitamins and Iron pills. Write that down”. So I go but that’s good for health and they only ask if you’ve…

Different kinda pancakes I love making pancakes. They can be healthy, sinful, comfort food, easy to make and most of all truly delicious. What are pancakes? Sometimes known as griddle cakes, hotcakes or flapjacks they are round, often thin flat cakes made using a starchy batter which may have added milk, butter, eggs, fruits, vegetables etc. There are many varieties of pancakes the world over right from the Indian uttapam to Dutch Baby, crepes, dosas, Chinese Scallions, Crumpets, Johnny cakes, Blini and so many more. Pancakes are served at different meals, depending on where it originates from. Some are served as breakfast, some along with stews, curries or meat/fish and vegetable preparations. Like Injera from Ethiopia is usually served with a variety of stews. Why…

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -SEPT 2017   #80TH BLOGGING MARATHON   THEME: PROTEIN RICH DISHES/LENTILS DAY:16 Last Sunday I met up with my best friend to catch up on events, thoughts, basically everything. She had gone on a cruise to Norway and I had loads to tell her about my dad’s stay in Montreal and our visit to Niagara Falls. She runs a kindergarten and though I retired from teaching nearly 10 years ago, we still have a passionate common topic and that it young kids. New academic year so there are bound to be kids who will cry their lungs out before they settle in. Usually every new term with new kids and she says that it doesn’t take a toll on her when kids cry…

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -SEPT 2017 #80TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: PROTEIN RICH DISHES DAY:9 Why is it important to include protein in our diet? Before I can explain the importance of protein, its imperative to know that proteins are of two kinds – complete proteins and incomplete proteins. Complete proteins means all 9 amino acids, the building blocks of protein are present such as meats. Most plant based proteins do not have all 9 amino acids present so it becomes important to mix your plant based proteins to get the maximum amount of protein requirement. We must include protein in our daily diet for the following reasons: All the cells in our bodies are composed of protein. These cells need protein to maintain and repair themselves. Every day…

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -SEPT 2017 #80TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: PROTEIN RICH DISHES DAY:6    Shopping at the Jean Talon and Atwater markets in Montreal is a foodies paradise. The bright, vibrant and fresh colors of the vegetables and fruits tempt the shoppers to overspend. I certainly go crazy when I visit the Jean Talon market which is about 30-40 minutes walk away from my son’s home. For hubby and me its like a child going to the fun fair. We visit all the stalls, breathe in the sweet smell, feast our eyes on the produces sold, gorge on a delicious buckwheat crepe, shop and walk back. Its during one of our trips to the market that I came across a punnet of baby tomatoes. It…

Amazing Gadgets     Whenever I’m at my son’s place in Montreal, the first few days go into cleaning his place. Out of all my three kids he’s probably the one with the most gadgets. Home cleaning becomes an easier task and love that our clothes do not have that awful damp smell. The wonders of a clothes dryer. His kitchen too is equipped with some of the best and powerful appliances. Every visit and we add a new gadget.      This time round I was appalled at the state of our very useful pressure cooker. The bottom no longer sits well on the hob and I just don’t want to get you into the colour of the poor pressure cooker. So I insisted that…

GUEST NO.7 ON THE BLOG         My 7th guest is my dear little sister Sapna.  Sapna is one of those type of people who does not like to take sides when two people fight. She never sided with either of us when my brother and I used to fight. She is a very dependable person and can juggle a series of chores in a jiffy. I have not spent that much time with my sister but whatever time I have spent with her is memorable. I’m so lucky to have a sister with whom I can share all my joys and sadness, distance makes no difference. She immediately will know how I will feel and I will get a comforting message from…
