EVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME: #234 SUPER NUTS AND SEEDS FoodieMonday/Bloghop Group FoodieMonday is a group of 12 enthusiastic food blogger who prepare a dish for every Monday based on a chosen theme. Through this group, not only have I learnt a lot more about different regional cuisines from the members but we tend to hold productive discussions about ingredients, cooking methods, recipes and in this manner share cooking related knowledge with each other. Theme Suggestion Using seeds or nuts or both is this week’s theme. You may think, that’s a pretty easy theme. However, it was not as easy as one may presume. Did you know that almonds, pistachios, cashew nuts, pine nuts, walnuts are not true nuts but seeds? Pecans, chestnuts are true nuts. Swaty suggested…

EVENT: BLOGGING MARATHON #88 THEME: KID’S DELIGHT – HEALTHY DRINKS – WEEK 3 DAY 3 I constantly to get to hear mums complaining about kids not eating. They tend to force feed toddlers and as a result meals becomes a constant battle between the mother and child. Your lunch time may not be your child’s lunch time. When my kids were growing up, my mother in law and I followed one rule, feed the children when they were hungry. No child can go without food. At some point they do feel hungry. Make meals an enjoyable part of their lives and not a chore or a battle. The other rule we followed as the kids grew up was, they ate what we ate. No special…

EVENT: BLOGGING MARATHON #88 THEME: KID’S DELIGHT – HEALTHY DRINKS – WEEK 3 DAY 2 As I mentioned in the Day 1 post for healthy drinks for kids, I want to refrain from using artificial flavors, additives, colors and today to the list I add harmful fats like hydrogenated vegetable fats. These are found in baked goods, restaurant foods, sold as margarine, finds its way into products like peanut butter, other nut spreads etc. Peanut butter in moderation is good for health. Making peanut butter at home is so easy. Roasted peanuts are processed in a food processor till it becomes a smooth paste. Its that simple. Why should kids have peanut butter included in their diet: Its rich in protein. Has good fat. Keeps…

EVENT:BLOGGING MARATHON #88 THEME: KID’S DELIGHT – HEALTHY DRINKS – WEEK 3 DAY 1 For the next 3 days I will be preparing healthy drinks for kids. Yes, I know I don’t have kids at home, mine are all grown up. Usually its this fact that prevents me from taking part in the monthly Kid’s Delight theme that is organized by Srivalli. However, for the month of May, I participated in this event. The good part is that fellow members who host this event can decide on the theme. I will be hosting the kid’s delight healthy drinks from 16th May to 16th June. There is a specific reason why I chose healthy drinks. When we have so many options of serving healthy home made…

Healthy Dessert For Kids Theme: Kid’s DelightBM#85 Week 3 Day 3    During my last trip to Montreal, during the weekend we decided to go to the Old Port area. It was bustling with people, it was a very hot sunny day, many food trucks were around selling food, desserts etc, stalls selling hats, sunglasses, souvenirs, and so many things. While most of the Canadians and tourists were enjoying the sweltering sun, I was looking for some place to sit under the shade. I  cannot bear really hot weather. It just zaps all my energy and I feel so sluggish. I finally found some place on the bench under a tree and right in front of the truck selling chocolate dipped frozen bananas. The choice…

Double TreatTheme: Kid’s Delight – Chocolate DishesBM#85 Week 2 Day 2   I often bake chocolate cakes, cookies and muffins for my niece and nephew. Whenever hubby and I visit his uncle, I take either cookies, muffins or cakes for the kids. For my nephew its the more chocolatey the better. I still remember when he was in hospital with dengue fever, he wanted to have chocolate cake and asked me to put chocolate pieces in them. That’s how much he loves chocolate. The next few days the only food he’d eat was cake. My niece now tries out some of the cakes that are on my blog. Its such an overwhelming feeling; the niece that I used to bake for now bakes for her family.  …

For Little Angels Theme: Kid’s Delight – Chocolate DishesBM#85 Week 3 Day 1   Its the first time that I’m actually making something with kids in mind. Mine are all grown up and now treat hubby and me like kids! Don’t do this, don’t travel alone, call us when you’re going out, etc etc. Does that sound familiar? Are we getting a dose of our own medicine? My daughter in this respect is just too over protective. Sometimes I feel good but sometimes get irritated when she thinks I can’t think for myself. However, when she automatically holds my hand when we’re crossing a very busy road, I feel so loved. When my sons ask me if I need anything, its such a comforting feeling. When…

  • Mum’s Vegetable Soup

    June 8, 2012mayurisjikoni

A Very Simple Vegetable Soup Mum’s Vegetable Soup is an easy to make soup without any oil, dried herbs, or spices besides pepper powder. Its one of the healthiest, nutritious and comforting soups that I enjoy. All you need are fresh vegetables like peas, potato, cauliflower, carrot, tomato, French beans and fresh corn if available. Why is it called Mum’s Vegetable Soup My mum didn’t know how to cook any other cuisine bedsides the Gujarati one. However some of her simple attempts at something different were definitely her own style like her pasta dish or her peas and egg pulao. One such preparation was the simple vegetable soup. The Nairobi Agricultural Show was a big event of out family. We would have a stall at the…
