• 721. Sourdough Pita Bread

Happy with my “Princess”    A weird title, right? Well, Princess is the name I’ve given my sourdough starter. At first I thought it like a weird idea to name the starter. Everyone who successfully makes a sourdough starter at home names it. I was wondering why. Now I know. You actually nuture it like a pet. Feed it and make sure its in the optimum environment.     Most days Princess is happy sitting idle in the fridge but on occasions I take her out and actually make something. This time round I made sourdough pita bread. I used a combination of wheat and plain flours. The pita bread turned out super yummy. I love the slight sour taste and did I mention it was…

Include Millet In Your Diet Theme: Cookies For Your Sweet Tooth BM#81 Week 2 Day 3 What is Pearl Millet? Even as a kid, I used to love pearl millet flour. Most kids don’t like it, but I used to love the bajri na debra, raab, rotla that my mum would make using this healthy or should I say super healthy grain. Pearl Millet, bajro, bajra, kambu, cattail millet, is a type of millet, which has been grown since prehistoric times in Africa and the Indian SubContinent. Health Benefits of Pearl Millet high in fibre helps to control blood sugar levels reduces cholesterol. Cookie,a must with tea or coffee Theme: Cookies For Your Sweet Tooth   BM #81 Week 2 Day 2    Isn’t it intriguing that when one has tea or coffee during mid morning or in the afternoon, one feels like having a cookie with it? I do. I usually want to have one small cookie with my afternoon tea. My siblings and I grew up having biscuits as we called them back then with our glass of milk. I enjoy dunking my cookie or biscuit in the tea, milk or coffee. A few places in the world will automatically serve a small cookie along with some coffee. I like that special treat whenever I get it.    I enjoying baking and cookies was what I learnt how to…

Savory Cookies are yum Theme: Cookies For Your Sweet Tooth BM #81 Week 2 Day 1      Since yesterday, the power fluctuation has been so annoying. The power keeps on coming and going every 10-15 minutes. On top of that there was no internet since yesterday! How can one get work done without reliable power or internet. We have become so dependent on power for everything. Be it housework, office work or any other kind of work, power is required. Where other countries take power supply for granted we here in Kenya still have to  treat it like a luxury but everything is done on computers! I think if Kenya wants to be recognized as a great reliable, friendly country its got to tackle so many issues and one of…

Cute bread rolls Theme: Surfing Through The Caribbeans BM #81- Day 2 Today we are visiting Guyana. Its a sovereign state on the northern mainland of South America. Before you think I’ve got my facts wrong about the Caribbeans, Guyana though not an island in the Caribbean, it is a part of the Caribbean region mainly because of its strong cultural, historical and political ties with the Anglo Caribbean countries and the Caribbean community. The official language is English and the other widely spoken language is Creole. A state with a diverse population consisting of people from Africa, Europe, China and India along with the indigenous people. Colonised by the Dutch and English, people were brought to Guyana to work on the plantations and rice…

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -SEPT 2017 #80TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: PROTEIN RICH DISHES DAY:26      Today is the last day of the Mega Blogging Marathon and what an experience it has been for me. Planning, researching, deciding, drafting and commenting. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this marathon. I’ve made new blogger friends, learnt so much about different regional cuisines from them and we have nearly 442 protein rich dishes between 17 bloggers. That certainly takes care of protein intake from starters to desserts. At this juncture I must thank fellow blogger Veena of Veena’s Vegnation. She casually asked me why I was not taking part in the Mega Marathon and I replied I don’t think I can post a recipe for every day for a month with only Sunday…

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -SEPT 2017 #80TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: PROTEIN RICH DISHES DAY:5 For this protein rich dish I nearly drove my husband up the walls! I wanted to bake individual portions for this recipe but my son’s kitchen didn’t have any individual oven friendly bowls. I researched online for the right kind of bakeware, and it had to be from my favorite shop Stokes. Next day it was raining but I insisted that we go to the shop. From home its about a 30-40 minute walk. Hubby took out all sorts of bakeware from the kitchen and I just kept rejecting them as my brains could only see the bakeware I had seen on the Stokes online store. Finally, as we all know, women…

Back Home Traveling back home is always heart breaking for me. Our trips abroad are usually to visit family. Its always a joyous time when we travel to them but heart breaking when we have to get back. This year we spent nearly 2 months in Montreal and I so didn’t want to come back. I miss my son(shhh hope the other 2 kids are not actually reading the post!). I miss him more so because he’s still single and not really ready to mingle so forget about having a soul mate, best mate etc etc. We don’t have any relatives or family friends in Montreal. The couple we had have moved to other cities. He has his friends, but not really close ones. He…

Just the right time to have ice cream    It has been really hot for the past few days in Montreal. Its humid and just the kind of weather all Canadians enjoy. People are out walking, jogging, having picnics, swimming, sailing, lazing in the sun. Hubby and I want to be indoors as the sun is too much for us. My dad is here, his first visit to Canada. He is from London, so he too is enjoying the really sunny hot days. When I run for the shade, he thinks I’m mad. So I had to remind him that I get more than enough sun back home in Mombasa, so I’d rather enjoy the cool or cold weather.    Anyway, its the right theme…

A quick dessert fix Theme: No Bake Desserts BM#78 Week 3 Day 2    I must admit its all these theme based cooking that is motivating me to either prepare bookmarked recipes or try out new recipes. I’ve come across so many mug cakes but never really bothered to try them out. For the No Bake Desserts theme, we are suppose to make a dessert which we would normally bake in a convectional oven but not bake it in an oven…confused?? Basically no using a convectional oven.     Taking advantage of the abundance of berries available in the markets in Montreal, I decided to make a mug cake in the microwave oven instead of using the convectional oven. I must admit I still love my…
