EVENT: BLOGGING MARATHON #88 THEME: REGIONAL CUISINE -WEEK 2 DAY 3 Tomorrow is my best best best (note the x3 best) friend’s 60th birthday. Today a lunch was organized by her and her hubby for their friends, as she put it people that have made a difference in her life. I baked a orange saffron semolina cake for her. Well, not going to talk about the party but as I was sitting right across her, I admired how she was glowing in her pink outfit and I just couldn’t believe she is 60! Still very active, no aches and pains to complain about, a recent dazzling grandmother as she likes to call herself. Slim, confident, disciplined, a good singer, can make any party lively. We’ve…

Drought–A national disaster 2016 did not bring enough rains to many parts of Kenya. Fast forward to 2017 and out of 47 counties 23 which are arid or semi arid parts of Kenya are facing drought. Rivers have dried up, animals and humans are dying without food. A National and International appeal has been sent out to help these areas with food and water. NGOs, Charity organisations, Private companies all have sent out foodstuff, but that is not enough. If the long rains do not arrive by April, then many more will die without food. Nakumatt has put a huge box near its exit if anyone would wish to buy some foodstuff to be donated. Every time I pass the box its empty! People cannot…

  • 420.braided pesto bread

    July 23, 2014mayurisjikoni

aroma therapy   While the bread was baking, the whole house was filled with the aroma of basil. My neighbour smelt basil all the way near the lift of our floor. She came to check what was cooking. Remember in my last post I mentioned that I made some pesto, well I used it to make some delicious bread which I wanted to bake for such a long time. Using biga to make the bread was the other temptation. Using biga makes the bread more flavourful. It gives more strength to weak flour. So the plain flour that we get in Kenya and India is quite weak compared to the ones available in the western countries. Its also amazing how two pinches of yeast can…

updated 30/08/2018 Since I’ve moved from blogger to WordPress, its been a huge learning experience for me. I find that when I finally figured out blogger, I moved and now it takes me a while to get use to terms like plugins, widgets, etc. I try to figure out as much as I can and when I fail have to call my daughter. These days she too is so busy as she is managing quite a few freelance projects which also includes work for my son and daughter in law’s upcoming boutique hotel project The Elementum. She is also trying to promote her own Type.Social as a content creator. Do take a while to check out both the sites. I cannot believe that my babies are now…

  • 76.kenyan and western influence

    June 5, 2012mayurisjikoni

Kenyan and western influence Collard or sukumawiki as we know it in Kenya is in abundance at the moment because of the rains. At this time the kale is not too hard and is very green. I have come across a lot of kale salad recipes but before I tried them out I tried eating raw kale and I found it a bit too chewy. But  I had to try a popular local vegetable with a bit of western ingredients. So, I tried out the following recipe and much to my delight and surprise, it turned out very tasty. But I must warn you, this dish is to be eaten with your fingers, as trying to use a fork, knife or a spoon is going…

crunchy green emeralds    Rainy season means loads of fresh crispy vegetables. Thats what exactly hit me when I entered the famous Mombasa Vegetable market this week. Just couldn’t make up my mind as to what to buy. Wanted to buy the whole market. The deep green fresh broccoli kept on beckoning me to buy her, him? I can eat raw broccoli, blanched, in soup form but I hate boiled broccoli. So it was broccoli salad for dinner on that day. The recipe is very easy to make and a nutritious one. Go on make it, you will love it. updated :05/05/2016           BROCCOLI SALAD Serves 2 1 cup broccoli florets, bite size 4-6 lettuce leaves or any greens of your…
