A rich cuisine Every week my blogging scene is a bit like the following – try and prepare and write out the post before or on Monday. I wait impatiently to see what the rest of the #FoodieMonday #Bloghop members have made pertaining to the chosen theme, then I visit the posts and comment on them. Tuesday the group whatsapp goes all haywire as we try and decide on the theme. So basically we get 5 days to prepare the dish. But 5 days just fly and by Sunday I’m thinking “oh dear my dish is not ready”. Then its like a storm in the kitchen. Well that’s the scene nowadays till my daughter gets married. When I’m in Mombasa I usually have the dish…

Angels are often disguised as daughters The week just goes by so quickly. Every day I wake up and say to myself,  2more months, few more weeks before the wedding and so much to do. Yesterday when we were discussing with my future son-in-law and his mum what happens after the wedding ceremony, so it was like bidaai (farewell to the bride) will happen and we take Nami (my daughter) with us. I wanted to burst into tears at the moment, as reality is fast approaching that she will belong to some other family. I had to be really strong and keep a smiling face, but am sure that if hubby dear would have been with me I surely would have burst out crying. As…

Satvik Food According to the Ayurveda(Indian traditional medicine), food is divided into 3 main groups, Satvik (Satvic), Tamasic and Rajasic. Food not only nourishes the body but affects the mind too. In this fast paced world our food is not only loaded with chemicals through fertilizers, canning, processing but we tend to overindulge in fast foods that are bad for our body, mind and health. We all get tempted by cheesy pizzas, delish bakes, silky chocolates. Satvik foods are smooth, savory, easy to digest, light and fresh. Satvik foods encourage mental clarity, good health and peace.Foods belonging to this group are rich in Prana(life force). Foods included in this category are basically lacto vegetarian foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, fresh diary products, grains and pulses, natural…

Hot and Spicy It’s very hot in Montreal so when the #FoodieMonday #Bloghop group decided on Monsoon Madness, as our 47th theme, I must admit I was in a dilemma. What do I make that’s apt for the Monsoon season without frying pakodas! For me monsoon season in Bangalore meant hot kheer or raab and dal vadas. I love the hot spicy vadas that are sold in the market areas around Bangalore. Monsoon also reminds me of the hot roasted corn(bhutta) in Mumbai near my sister- in -law’s apartment and Juhu beach. Roasted corn with lemon and red chilli powder is so delicious. A couple of days ago we had bought some fresh corn to boil and have with some butter or lime. The corn…

  • Rice Vada

    March 28, 2016mayurisjikoni

The week passed by so fast, its already FoodieMonday Bloghop day. Our 33rd theme is #rice. When the theme was decided, I bought the ingredients to make a coconut rice pudding. But during the course of the week the rice was not used for the pudding but for vadas. When family visits, its food, food and more food. Its been really nice to have my dad, kaka, kaki and foi here. In between going out and having long chatting sessions, I try to cook something. I decided to make vadas as I wanted to make a quick but satisfying snack. Accompanied with a coconut chutney, this snack is perfect to take the edge off the nail biting  Twenty 20 cricket matches that are going on…

A good break Sometimes its nice to get away from the blogging world. One needs to take a break and not feel, I need to add a recipe, I need to keep my followers busy, etc etc. Though I had not planned to take a break from blogging while I was visiting my son in Montreal, it was a compulsory break. His computer was not working too well, it was just too slow. I tried uploading photos and it took forever. The first few days I missed blogging but then got busy and didn’t miss it that much. This time round hubby and I made frequent trips to the lovely vibrant and colourful Jean Talon Market. It was a good walk to and fro for both…

I am missing Star Plus! Yes, I am. I love watching the series on Star Plus. Suddenly our cable provider decided to not air the Star channels from 1st May. Obviously its a way to get more money and that too from the Asian viewers. Though I don’t watch, actually watch all of them, I have the telly on while I am blogging, checking mail, doing my sudoku , crossword etc. Its like following the stories without actually paying much attention to the series. I watch Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Yeh rishta, and Diya aur Baati hum attentively. So for now missing the series.. okay, do try and catch them on the internet, that’s if the connection is good. I pity all those retired and old…

Generosity What is generosity? Its readiness or liberality in giving, kind, amplitude. Any charity organization in the world depends on the generosity of the people. People can be generous by donating money, providing service or being a part of the support. Providing service to the needy and less fortunate costs money. Recently my Club, Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari, held a fundraising event. The committee organized a dinner and dance event. Music was provided by our local band Mombasa Roots and Voyager Beach Hotel helped in organizing this event and providing the entertainment. I think the hardest part was selling the tickets. Its so difficult to convince people to buy the tickets for a charity event. The event went well and was supported by many well…

jet lag 🙁   Travelling between different time zones and that too in the easterly direction is no laughing matter for me. My body wants to sleep when the rest of this part of the world is up and about and lacks sleep when they are resting. In medical terms its known as desynchronosis but more commonly its called jet lag. Travelling from Montreal to London and then to Mombasa, the body is pretty confused. Last time it took several days before my routine came back. It appears that the same is going to happen again. The cooler rainy weather doesn’t help as I just want to curl up and go to sleep.     Well at the moment I am up so thought I should…

EVENT: FOODIES_ REDOING OLD POSTS #10 What is the advantage of this theme? For the 10th week on Foodies_Redoing Old Posts, marble barfi got a new look.Old posts just get lost in the wide wide wide web unless they are very popular. Renu who blog’s at Cook with Renu has started a Facebook Group called Foodies_ Redoing Old Posts where every two weeks we can redo our old posts and share it on the group. What’s the advantage of doing this? Well, it gives us the opportunity to improve the write up, update photos and get comments. I’ve got so many old posts that need updating especially where the photos are concerned. This group definitely gives me the ‘push’ to prepare the dishes again for…
