EVENT: A- Z CHALLENGE THEME : A DISH BEGINNING WITH THE LETTER D What is the A- Z Challenge? Well, we’re a Facebook group and every alternate month the participants make a dish with the  relevant letter. The group was started in May 2018 by Jolly Makkar and Vidya Narayan.  For November we have to post a recipe with the letter D. The star ingredient for the dish should begin with D. I made Dalithoi to go with my  Vastad Roti when I was doing the A- Z Indian Flatbreads for another group and I was feeling great that I’ve got my D recipe ready. Then a member asked about whether the dish name can begin with the specified letter and I re checked with Vidya.…

EVENT: MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON#92 THEME: A-Z  FLATBREADS AND MORE – INDIAN FLATBREADS What is Mega Blogging Marathon? Well, its a group of bloggers who get together to post a dish for 26 days according to the chosen theme. For more details check out the initiator Srivalli’s page here. For this theme we had a choice of 3: 1. A-Z Indian Flatbreads that are not made using batter e.g. like rotis 2. A-Z Indian Flatbreads using batters e.g. dosa 3. A-Z International Flatbreads. I decided to opt for option number 1. India has such a huge variety of flatbreads to offer that are made on the stove top, in the tandoor, in the oven, under the grill or fried. Its going to be a challenge to…

EVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME: #154 FILMI FOODIES Whenever Mallika who blogs at A Foodie Housewife suggests a theme for our weekly FoodieMonday group, she comes up with unique ideas. The #154th theme suggested by her was Filmi Foodies. So what does that mean? Well, either you make a dish that your favorite actor (note that these days there is no gender differentiation) loves, or any dish/dishes that an actor suggests or makes for the masses to follow their diet and nutritional plan or make a dish that has featured in a movie. The first foodie movie that I watched was Cheeni Kum. However, being a vegetarian I didn’t want to go into the whole procedure of creating a Hyderbadi Zafrani Pulao without meat. After that I watched…

EVENT: SHHH COOKING SECRETLY THEME:  JAMMU AND KASHMIR CUISINE The first time I ever tasted anything Kashmiri was when my sister in law got married to a Kashmiri Brahmin. It was during one of our visits to India that her mother in law insisted that we enjoy a full Kashmiri meal, all vegetarian and without any onion or garlic. My first introduction to this totally different cuisine was an eye opener for me. Simple, healthy and flavorful. Whenever anyone mentions Kashmiri cuisine the first thing that comes to mind is dum aloo in a thick creamy gravy. While quite a few dishes are made in thick creamy gravy, or Wazwan style, there is another whole style of cooking that was traditionally followed by the Kashmiri…

EVENT: BLOGGING MARATHON #89 WEEK 2 DAY 1 THEME: MAKE ONE TYPE OF INDIAN SWEET For the #89th BM theme I chose make one type of Indian Sweet as I specifically had one famous and easy Indian sweet in mind, and that is kheer. I want to show that any type of kheer can be made into a sugar less option too. I personally don’t like the taste of any artificial sweeteners. However hubby loves his stevia. When I made the kheer, I added sugar at the last stage. I removed a portion for hubby, added stevia and to mine I added sugar. Also one is able to control the amount of sugar according to their taste. Don’t want to add sugar then add palm…

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON – APRIL 2018 #87TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: EXPLORE THE FLAVORS – INTERNATIONAL BREAKFAST DAY 13 “Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and Dine like a Pauper” Wow, we’ve reached half way, another half to go. As the letters are passing by so quickly so are the days.  I had the real Monday Blues today. Got up early, beat the clock and finished all my kitchen work before the water went away and was all ready to tackle a few hours on the computer. However, suddenly I felt a little dizzy and couldn’t concentrate on what I was supposed to write. Decided to rest a bit till hubby comes home for lunch. Served lunch, didn’t feel like eating much but he…

Modern style laddoos    Majority of us love our desserts and the more sinful the better. However, in this modern age when we spend more time sitting and when our daily work or chores does not involve strenuous physical activities, we cannot really indulgent in those sinful desserts on a regular basis. I’ve stopped stocking on ice creams and haven’t made a decent sinful dessert in a very long time. The last indulgence was on my birthday when I had waffles topped with hazelnut ice cream, chocolate sauce a generous swirl of fresh cream…sigh!!!!!    That does not mean I’ve become a goodie goodie or am so disciplined that I can resist all those sinful desserts. I just stay away from them. Its at times…

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -SEPT 2017 #80TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: PROTEIN RICH DISHES DAY:26      Today is the last day of the Mega Blogging Marathon and what an experience it has been for me. Planning, researching, deciding, drafting and commenting. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this marathon. I’ve made new blogger friends, learnt so much about different regional cuisines from them and we have nearly 442 protein rich dishes between 17 bloggers. That certainly takes care of protein intake from starters to desserts. At this juncture I must thank fellow blogger Veena of Veena’s Vegnation. She casually asked me why I was not taking part in the Mega Marathon and I replied I don’t think I can post a recipe for every day for a month with only Sunday…

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -SEPT 2017 #80TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: PROTEIN RICH DISHES DAY:13    Plastic is becoming a mega concern world over as the land and oceans are getting littered with this ‘we love to use it so much’ product. Low production cost, easy to manufacture, versatile, impervious to water, easily moldable, has made this product so popular world over that its used right from pins heads to space ships. Its replaced wood, metal, glass, ceramic, paper, stone, leather etc. However, misuse of plastic has caused it to become as one of the major environmental threats to the world. Its alarming that minute particles are making their way to our food. Both land and sea animals are ingesting plastic and this in turn is landing up on our plates.…

A rich cuisine Every week my blogging scene is a bit like the following – try and prepare and write out the post before or on Monday. I wait impatiently to see what the rest of the #FoodieMonday #Bloghop members have made pertaining to the chosen theme, then I visit the posts and comment on them. Tuesday the group whatsapp goes all haywire as we try and decide on the theme. So basically we get 5 days to prepare the dish. But 5 days just fly and by Sunday I’m thinking “oh dear my dish is not ready”. Then its like a storm in the kitchen. Well that’s the scene nowadays till my daughter gets married. When I’m in Mombasa I usually have the dish…
