Gyros, pronounced as ‘eeyros’ is a Greek popular street food which is like a sandwich but served on a flat pita bread. The fillings range from chicken, lamb to vegetables. For a vegetarian version, roasted vegetables, chickpeas, pulled jackfruit are used. Actually, let your imagination run riot and use any of your favorite filling. Meat or veggie is usually served with salad ingredients like any other sandwich. In place of mayonnaise fresh sauces like tzatziki or hummus is used. To create a delicious vegetarian version I used chickpeas.   Group theme This week, our FoodieMonday/Bloghop theme is Mediterranean Cuisine. Any dish made from that region. EVENT: SHHH COOKING SECRETLY THEME: NAGALAND CUISINE Nagaland, one of the seven sister state is mountainous state bordering Myanmar in the east, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to the north, Assam to the west and Manipur to the south. Home to diverse indigenous tribes, their markets and festivals celebrate diverse cultures. I had no idea that the capital city of the state, Kohima, suffered heavy fighting during World War 2. Nagaland is one of the smallest states of India, but by no means backward. Literacy rate is 79.55% and the official language is English. Though the 16 different tribes may have different cultures, ethnic dresses and different languages, the official language unifies them as one. Majority of the people from Nagaland are Christians by faith. 20%…

EVENT:FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME:#184 PEGAN DIET Nope, its not a spelling mistake the word is definitely PEGAN. When Veena who blogs at Veena’s Veg nation suggested the theme, I too thought that she made a spelling mistake as the nearest I could think of was vegan. She quickly clarified that it was Pegan and sent a link for us to read. Last Monday was the day when we all, except Veena of course discovered a new diet  Pegan. I think after the theme was announced most of us spent the evening reading about it and discovering what its all about. Also what followed was endless discussions and I think all of us were trying to figure out what the others are going to make, but all guarded…

Potluck dinner, Potluck lunch, spread, bring and share, covered dish, pass on dish etc are some other terms used for food that is prepared by a guest at home and brought to the host’s place to share with others. While most guests prefer to cook something, these the trend is moving to buying food from restaurants or stores and sharing. The overall idea of having guests bring a dish means you land up with a feast. However sometimes these kind of parties can turn into a disaster if the host doesn’t plan well. Here are some guidelines that you may want to…

  • Detox Water – 7 varieties

    November 12, 2018mayurisjikoni

EVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME: #170 DETOX RECIPE After all the Diwali fried snacks, sweets, desserts, heavy meals, its time to give the tummy a rest and give it a good detox. Just the right theme at the right time, well thought out by Kriti who blogs at  Krispy Kadhai. So what’s all this hype about detox water, detox soup, detox salad, detox meals, detox smoothies etc, etc. etc? Well, basically its more of a marketing tactic. None of them contain any magic formula or chemical to miraculously detox the body in a matter of 1 or 3 days. Our body is designed to detox regularly, meaning getting rid of toxins on a daily basis. For that to happen our liver and kidneys have to work perfectly.…

EVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME: #165 NAVRATRI SPECIAL Navratri is just round the corner and many homes especially ladies are getting ready for the 9 days festival. For Gujaratis it means garba and dandhia. It’s also the time when many fast for the 9 days. Different people fast in different ways depending on their tradition, culture or area they come for. For most Gujaratis these 9 days of fasting means no grains or pulses are consumed along with many of the beans and other vegetables. The dishes one can prepare are exactly as the same as the ones we make for Ekadashi or Farali.  There are some who fast 9 days without taking any salt and only eat fruits, nuts and milk. I carried some buckwheat groat…

EVENT: A-Z CHALLENGE THEME: A DISH BEGINNING WITH THE LETTER B Before I go into my usual story telling mode, I have to explain to you what the A-Z challenge group is all about. Every alternate month the participants make a dish with the  relevant letter. The group was started in May by Jolly Makkar and Vidya Narayan. The first letter was A. For July we have to post a recipe with the letter B.  I have chosen to use blueberries. The past few days in Montreal have been unbearably hot. Many states towards the Eastern side are experiencing a heat wave where temperatures are rising to 34°C but it feels so much hotter than that. A couple of days ago we went out as…

Where are the RAINS?    Today my brain is all foggy and I can barely keep my eyes open. Last night was an uncomfortable hot night. The AC was on but I still felt hot. Its probably around 4a.m. that I fell asleep and got up at 8  a.m.! That meant it was like a mad rush getting lunch ready, getting the washing machine started and all the usual chores before 10a.m. when the water disappears from the taps. I didn’t manage to beat the clock, some chores are left and will have to tackle them after 4 when the water returns.     Many parts of Kenya have rainfall to the extend that floods are closing down roads, bridges and some places are impossible to…
