• Detox Water – 7 varieties

EVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP THEME: #170 DETOX RECIPE After all the Diwali fried snacks, sweets, desserts, heavy meals, its time to give the tummy a rest and give it a good detox. Just the right theme at the right time, well thought out by Kriti who blogs at  Krispy Kadhai. So what’s all this hype about detox water, detox soup, detox salad, detox meals, detox smoothies etc, etc. etc? Well, basically its more of a marketing tactic. None of them contain any magic formula or chemical to miraculously detox the body in a matter of 1 or 3 days. Our body is designed to detox regularly, meaning getting rid of toxins on a daily basis. For that to happen our liver and kidneys have to work perfectly.…

Event: Blogging Marathon #88 Theme: Regional Cuisine – Week 2  Day 1 We’ve just got over the Mega Blogging Marathon, I still have so many blog posts to comment on, then there are other group challenges. I nearly did not participate in this month’s BM challenge. However, I remembered that I’m hosting the Kid’s Friendly Event this month where I’ll have the linky tool up by next week for Kids Healthy Drinks. The curious me also wanted to know what the themes were. I thought “just read and get out of the blog post”. Yeah right! Like that is possible–dahhhh! Food Bloggers are quite gullible when it comes to some different kind of themes and challenges. I read regional cuisines and bells began to ring.…

  • 726. Cheese Stuffed Garlic Pull Apart Bread#BreadBakers

    November 14, 2017mayurisjikoni

Cheese Stuffed Garlic Pull Apart Bread#BreadBakers Theme: Pull Apart Breads Pull Apart Bread has been on my ‘to do’ list for a long time. I’ve done mini ones in a muffin pan, but wanted to bake one in a bundt pan. However, the bundt pan part didn’t really work out but the pull apart bread got baked. My daughter keeps on insisting that she’s not going to eat much carbs, so initially I tried baking half the recipe to give a small loaf. First all, its the first time I’m halving a basic bread recipe so forgot that I should add less salt. The small miserable looking loaf didn’t come out too well and it was salty. However, my daughter liked the idea of tiny…

Let’s break bread internationally What is bread? Bread is basically flour and water mixed together and then either baked, roasted or fried. Different parts of the world use different flours and different ingredients are added to make it soft, with crumbs, with flavor and to give it a required texture. Most part of the world considers some form of bread as their staple diet except for East Asia where the stable is rice and some African countries where the staple is cornmeal cooked into a porridge like consistency. We have the more famous brioche, baguettes, rye breads, naans, parathas to less heard of breads like dorayaki, kaya, lahoh. The list of different breads all over the world is endless. For the month of September, our host Wendy who blogs at A Day in the Life…

Amaranth Flatbread#BreadBakers Healthy Start  Happy New Year to all the members of the wonderful, wonderful group Bread Bakers. I’m so glad to be part of a group where we learn so much about not only different breads and techniques but get to know each member more through their blogs, culture and festivals. Pavani of Cook’s Hideout wanted us to begin the new year with some healthy breads. A great theme Pavani, can’t wait to check out what other participants have baked. I decided to use amaranth as my healthy ingredient. I made Amaranth Flatbread for the first time and it turned out so good. I’ll probably use that as a pizza base or make a focaccia next time. I made an apple salsa to go…

  • 523. Baked breaded mushrooms

    October 6, 2015mayurisjikoni

Just too expensive We all understand that food prices are rising all the time. Sometimes its the scarcity or the petrol price. Whatever the reason may be we all are paying more for basic food. Last weekend My hubby and I went to one of our favourite restaurant to have lunch. Hubby usually orders fish and I stick to pasta(not many vegetarian options). For starters,we share the usual plate of breaded mushrooms. However, this time round we got only 6 button mushrooms on the plate. Previously we would get at least 10 – 12. On top of that the price had increased so basically for every breaded mushroom that went into out mouth,we had paid nearly 85c for it. All those living in the developed…

  • 90. mushroom soup

    June 15, 2012mayurisjikoni

tastes better than the packet one   Mushroom soup is one of my favourite soups. Every time I make it, I remember the mushroom soup that was served at Driftwood in Malindi. While my family were having their choice of fish or chicken, I was not left with much of a choice. It was either vegetable curry or soups. So as the main dish, I decided to have mushroom soup and french fries. Weird combination, but better than the vegetable curry.  When my soup arrived, I was really shocked. The soup may have been a packet soup but the presentation was fantastic. A huge round bread with the top one third sliced off and the inside scooped out. The soup was in the scooped out…

  • 23. Bruschetta

    March 11, 2012mayurisjikoni

A quick tangy starter Bruschetta(pronounced as brusketta) is an easy and popular italian starter. It has acquired local flavours like addition of chillis, soya sauce and a variety of herbs. Some serve bruschetta on semi soft toasted bread, soft bread or crispy bread. Personally, I prefer crispy crunchy bread. Add the chopped vegetables onto the bread slices just before serving or keep it in a separate bowl and let your guests help themselves. Use ciabatta, french loaf or any bread (not sweet bread) with medium slices.   BRUSCHETTA 10 – 12 pieces 10 – 12 slices of bread 2 large tomatoes 1 small onion 10 olives black or green or mixed 1tsp dried herbs or 2tbsps fresh herbs chopped 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper…

  • tomato carrot soup

    January 11, 2012mayurisjikoni

I love tomatoes. Its such a versatile fruit and an important ingredient for most dishes whether it be curries or salads. My all time favourite is tomato soup. Ready made tomato soup whether in restaurants or from packets is a bit tangy. So I made a few amendments to suit the taste buds of all in the family. Hope you like it too. Note that in this recipe I have not used oil or butter. No wonder its an excellent healthy start to a meal. A cup of soup before a meal helps you to cut down on meal portions. Soup, bread and salad make an excellent light meal option. I add different herbs, fresh or dried every time I make the soup. Carrots add…
