EVENT: MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON#92 THEME: A-Z  FLATBREADS AND MORE – INDIAN FLATBREADS What is Mega Blogging Marathon? Well, its a group of bloggers who get together to post a dish for 26 days according to the chosen theme. For more details check out the initiator Srivalli’s page here. For this theme we had a choice of 3: 1. A-Z Indian Flatbreads that are not made using batter e.g. like rotis 2. A-Z Indian Flatbreads using batters e.g. dosa 3. A-Z International Flatbreads. I decided to opt for option number 1. India has such a huge variety of flatbreads to offer that are made on the stove top, in the tandoor, in the oven, under the grill or fried. Its going to be a challenge to…

EVENT: FOOD BLOGGERS RECIPE SWAP – No.4 Food Bloggers Recipe Swap is a group of food bloggers who prepare a dish from a blogger’s blog. The group initiator Amber pairs up the participants. We then decide what we want to make from our partner’s blog. Usually we add a slight twist of our own or cook it the way we like but the main ingredients remain the same. At the end of the month we share our recipe link on the FB page. What is idli? Idli is a famous South Indian dish made from fermented rice and white lentil(black gram) batter. It is steamed and considered one of the most healthiest food. It can be served with sambhar, a lentil curry and coconut chutney,…

EVENT:BLOGGING MARATHON #88 THEME: KID’S DELIGHT – HEALTHY DRINKS – WEEK 3 DAY 1 For the next 3 days I will be preparing healthy drinks for kids. Yes, I know I don’t have kids at home, mine are all grown up. Usually its this fact that prevents me from taking part in the monthly Kid’s Delight theme that is organized by Srivalli. However, for the month of May, I participated in this event. The good part is that fellow members who host this event can decide on the theme. I will be hosting the kid’s delight healthy drinks from 16th May to 16th June. There is a specific reason why I chose healthy drinks. When we have so many options of serving healthy home made…

The weather in Mombasa has changed from super hot to cool within a week. Feb and march were really hot, so hot that I’d want to get out of the kitchen as quickly as possible. My kitchen is partially an open plan one, don’t have a door and it leads straight to the dining area. Hubby decided to fit in an AC in the dining living room area. It would also help to bring down the temperature in the kitchen. After much planning got it fitted only for the weather to change. Since its installation have used it only once and that too it was a test drive! Many parts of Kenya are flooded. Roads have been washed away and small bridges have fallen.  Homes…

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -APRIL 2018 #87 BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: EXPLORE THE FLAVORS – INTERNATIONAL BREAKFAST DAY 24 “Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince and Dine like a Pauper” Finally it’s the day when I’ve come to the most difficult letter and that is X. Till 10 days ago I was still searching for a traditional breakfast recipe. Googling for foods beginning with X was not fruitful. Then I decided to try the other way round, googling for foods from each country. The only logic I used to google China was that is perhaps one of the few languages where X is used extensively. And hey presto like magic Xiao Mi Zhou appeared. Xiao Mi Zhou is a millet porridge that is common in…

Team Love     For the past few days the weather has completely changed in Bangalore…its chilly cold and rainy. It could be due to the cyclone Ockhi that hit Kerala.Unlike homes in the western world, there is no central heating system so one has to wrap up pretty warm. I hate wearing a sweater as I find them too itchy so come evening and I wrapped myself in a shawl and topped with a thick bed sheet. After that didn’t want to budge even a millimeter. Hot water and hot milk becomes one’s best friend. It also meant that I didn’t want to have my usual smoothie for breakfast. I wanted something hot that would warm up the body. What better breakfast treat is…

Include Millet In Your Diet Theme: Cookies For Your Sweet Tooth BM#81 Week 2 Day 3      Today has been such a horrible day for me. I wait till 9a.m. for the maid to turn up. I had planned so many Diwali cooking and baking items but didn’t get even one done. She turns up after 9 and goes and sits down. I was a bit annoyed so didn’t say anything. After a few minutes I hear long sighs… what a brilliant way to attract attention. I go to her and she tells me she is sick. So I tell her to go back home and rest and come back when she is well. She continues to sit there. The softie me asks her if she needs a cup of…

Super Healthy    Navratri and Dussera are over, all the feasting is over..for now. After all the rich snacks and desserts, Saturday meal was a simple khichdi made using bajri (bajra, pearl millet) and moong dal.        The 112th theme for FoodieMonday/Bloghop suggested by Amrita who blogs at The Food Samaritan, was #1Tsp Oil. This theme couldn’t have come at a better time. Saturday meal was definitely light on the stomach and yet full of nutrition. Thanks Amrita for encouraging us to cook with little or no oil.     On my ‘to do list’ was this bajra khichdi ever since Sapana of Cooking with Sapana posted the recipe for the protein rich dishes theme. Sapana thank you so much, the khichdi turned out really delicious.  …

Millet is not just for birds Millet, an ancient grain is the least popular of all the other ancient grains in spite of having so many nutritional benefits. Millet is not actually a grain but its a grass seed. In ancient times millet was more widely used then rice in Asia and Africa. Slowly this ancient grain got replaced by other grains. Millet actually does not require that much water and can be grown in semi arid areas too. No wonder places like semi arid Rajasthan have bajra rotla as a part of their staple diet. Why you should include millet in your diet: Its gluten free It is alkaline Digests easily Helps lower the effects of Diabetes 2 Its rich in magnesium and potassium,…
