MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -APRIL 2018 #87TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: EXPLORE THE FLAVORS – INTERNATIONAL BREAKFAST DAY 25 I cannot believe that the mega blogging marathon is nearly getting over. However, that does not mean we can relax and breathe. I know already some of my fellow members have already started preparing for the September Mega Blogging Marathon. I still have to begin my search for the theme. For Day 25 the letter is Y. Not many options with Y.  I had youtiao from China in mind. It looks like churros but is not sweet and is served with congee or milk. As I didn’t want to repeat the country I had to cancel youtiao as I made xiao mi zhou  from China. After much thought…

MEGA BLOGGING MARATHON -SEPT 2017 #80TH BLOGGING MARATHON THEME: PROTEIN RICH DISHES DAY:2 When we were growing up, my dad would insist that we must have a glass milk and a banana before we left for school. I think this continued till I went to a boarding school. Usually we would not want to eat anything in the morning but my mum would be like a strict General in the Army, with her hands on her hips and would not budge till we drank the milk and ate the banana. My sister would hide the glass of milk in the netted cupboard when she would notice that my mum’s attention is on my brother or me. Remember in the olden days when a simple wood…

Navratri celebrations Its amazing how different states of India celebrate Navratri. Some with poojas and havans, some by laying out different types of miniature dolls depicting the Gods, demi Gods, animals and people. For Gujaratis its all about garbas and dandiya raas. I miss the small familiar community celebration that takes place every year at the Patel Samaj in Mombasa. This year I’m in Bangalore. Years back when I was in Bangalore with my daughter, Navratri passed by without much happening. The highlight was a pooja in our society Club house and then Dussera celebration. However, Navratri celebrations have taken on a whole new meaning. As HSR Layout gets more developed, we saw lots of decorations and more temples celebrating the festival. A Durga ma…

a healthy treat These days the new health rage is seeds like chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, any thing that is coconut, mixture of fruits and vegetables. The list is endless. Even before chia seeds came onto the market, India has been using falooda seeds, Basil seeds or takmariya or sabja as its commonly known in faloodas and added in milk to give a cool refreshing drink. I remember pestering my mum to add spoonfuls of takmariya in my milk. She would tell me that too much is not good. Contrary to her belief basil seeds and chia seeds are very healthy. There are slight difference between basil and chia seeds. While basil seeds are derived from basil plant which is mainly found in…

Healthy start to the day Many of us cannot begin the day without breakfast, some don’t have breakfast at all and some just need their daily mug of coffee or tea to begin the day. I cannot skip breakfast especially when I am not fasting. I love to have bread and tea or cereal. However, I have recently got hubby dear to have oats instead of cereal as they say even though he has bran flakes, all cereals contain sugar. I prefer to have a nice thick smoothie. Whatever ingredients I use for his porridge mine go into the blender. My day begins with work in the kitchen before the water disappears, yoga and then after a cold shower, and my prayers I relax and…
