EVENT: BLOGGING MARATHON #89 WEEK 2 DAY 1 THEME: MAKE ONE TYPE OF INDIAN SWEET For the #89th BM theme I chose make one type of Indian Sweet as I specifically had one famous and easy Indian sweet in mind, and that is kheer. I want to show that any type of kheer can be made into a sugar less option too. I personally don’t like the taste of any artificial sweeteners. However hubby loves his stevia. When I made the kheer, I added sugar at the last stage. I removed a portion for hubby, added stevia and to mine I added sugar. Also one is able to control the amount of sugar according to their taste. Don’t want to add sugar then add palm…

Modern style laddoos    Majority of us love our desserts and the more sinful the better. However, in this modern age when we spend more time sitting and when our daily work or chores does not involve strenuous physical activities, we cannot really indulgent in those sinful desserts on a regular basis. I’ve stopped stocking on ice creams and haven’t made a decent sinful dessert in a very long time. The last indulgence was on my birthday when I had waffles topped with hazelnut ice cream, chocolate sauce a generous swirl of fresh cream…sigh!!!!!    That does not mean I’ve become a goodie goodie or am so disciplined that I can resist all those sinful desserts. I just stay away from them. Its at times…

Healthy Red    Mondays comes just too fast.Imagine we’re already into the second month of the year. In just a month, the other Presidential Election candidate, who lost the second round of election that took place in Nov, was ‘sworn’ in as the ‘People’s President’. In their battle to win the powerful chair, the country is still battling with basic needs. High Food Prices, clean drinking water, better roads, proper sanitation, a cleaner environment to name a few issue needs urgent attention. So many issues to tackle. Mombasa has trash dumped all on roadsides and the hills are going taller by the day. I wish the politicians would for once with dedication just get on with what their tasks are instead of wasting time and useful…

Shravan…. A Holy Month    Shravan or Saawan is the holiest month in the Hindu Calendar. Many Hindus fast for the whole of the Shravan Maas or month. Different Hindu Communities begin the fast on different dates. Some begin the fast immediately after Guru Purnima and some later on in the month. This holy month then culminates with Raksha Bandhan, a festival where the sisters tie a rakhi or thread on the wrists of their brothers. Some people fast the whole month i.e. every day for the whole month and some fast every Monday of this holy month and are called the Shravan Somvar Vrat.          Why is this month so important to the Hindus? According to the Hindu Mythology, when the Gods…

Season’s Greetings to all Hope you all have had a wonderful Christmas holiday. It’s really satisfying to be back to blogging after over a month. My daughter is married and happy with her hubby and new family. Must say it has been a roller coaster ride for us preparing for this wedding. We call my daughter ‘The drama queen of the family’ and drama certainly happened ever so often. Don’t get me wrong it was not her creating the drama, but events or mishaps which would be followed by drama from the ‘queen’. The first such incident was when special earrings she had ordered from a designer all the way in Ludhiana arrived let’s say just for one ear and not two! That’s the time…

Date and Chai Muffins#BreadBakers Natural Sweeteners While browsing on Facebook one night, I saw a message from Stacy the initiator of Bread Bakers group, requesting members to host the coming months. Quickly, she found hosts for August to December 2016.The only month left was July! For a long time I wanted to host but what put me off was the too technical sounding google documents and htmls and all those alien technological terms. There are files explaining how to go about it, but a mental block was making the whole task sound just too difficult. Knowing that in July I would be spending time with my son in Montreal, I quickly “whatsapped” him asking if he will help to create the document. “Of course mum,”…

  • 525. 4 Ingredient banana oat bars

    October 10, 2015mayurisjikoni

It is healthy!     Our Home Bakers Challenge for the month of October was Oat Bakes, recipes selected by fellow blogger Rafeeda of The Big Sweet Tooth. All the recipes were tempting to bake but for a change I chose the healthiest one. No sugar and no fat, yes you read right no sugar or fat. So you can imagine the bake without even fat. It was a big chewy but what I like about these bars is that it can be a snack for in between meals, a sweet treat after meals or can have it for breakfast. I know what I am going to carry with me when I am travelling next time especially by Ethiopian Airlines. As I mentioned before, long…

It’s an Honour    Last Saturday was an exciting day for me. I was installed as the 19th President of my very hardworking and active Club, Lions Club of Mombasa Bahari. Since the Club was chartered, I have been a part of it. First as a spouse and then as a Lion. The best part was that one of my good friend Lion Tasneem Dar, performed the ceremony of installing me along with my board members. My best friend Daxa and Jitu were there to share the milestone in my life along with my brother in law and sister in law. The surprise moment was when my hubby Ajay, sang a song for me. I was feeling shy, happy and loved all at the same…

A happy and peaceful Eid    The month long fasting period is over and its time to celebrate Eid. Fasting for a whole month without water and carrying on with ones work and routine is not easy. Hot weather makes fasting that much more harder and I feel bad for the ones fasting in the Western countries. For them the fasting period lasts longer. During the month of Ramadhan, loads of street food is sold for Iftar, samosas, kebabs, juices, mamri, kaimatis, dates etc etc.    One cannot help but get into the festive mood in Mombasa. Shops and malls are decorated, shops are busy and open till late. Delicious food is sent home by Muslim friends and tempting aromas waft through from neighbours homes.…

hold that sugar! We all know that sugar is not good for our health but how often do we get attracted to sweet things… sweet drinks, cakes, muffins, cookies, indian sweets. It is so difficult to resist the very things that are bad for our health. I have tried substituting sugar with the artificial sweeteners but can’t stand the bitter after taste. And then all this confusion about artificial sweeteners not being good for us.There is a lot of rave about stevia, but have not used it as such. Its difficult to get it here so will wait to buy some during my next trip abroad. My bookmarked, untried written recipes and also from other blogs are just piling up and every time I try…
