Double TreatTheme: Kid’s Delight – Chocolate DishesBM#85 Week 2 Day 2   I often bake chocolate cakes, cookies and muffins for my niece and nephew. Whenever hubby and I visit his uncle, I take either cookies, muffins or cakes for the kids. For my nephew its the more chocolatey the better. I still remember when he was in hospital with dengue fever, he wanted to have chocolate cake and asked me to put chocolate pieces in them. That’s how much he loves chocolate. The next few days the only food he’d eat was cake. My niece now tries out some of the cakes that are on my blog. Its such an overwhelming feeling; the niece that I used to bake for now bakes for her family.  …

For Little Angels Theme: Kid’s Delight – Chocolate DishesBM#85 Week 3 Day 1   Its the first time that I’m actually making something with kids in mind. Mine are all grown up and now treat hubby and me like kids! Don’t do this, don’t travel alone, call us when you’re going out, etc etc. Does that sound familiar? Are we getting a dose of our own medicine? My daughter in this respect is just too over protective. Sometimes I feel good but sometimes get irritated when she thinks I can’t think for myself. However, when she automatically holds my hand when we’re crossing a very busy road, I feel so loved. When my sons ask me if I need anything, its such a comforting feeling. When…

A Belated Happy New Year    A belated wish is better than none, so a belated Happy New Year to all my friends, family and followers. I’ve been on a no blogging much required vacation. Sometimes its truly relaxing just to turn your mind off from blogging and any blogging related activity.    Hubby and I were supposed to spend Christmas and New Year with my son, daughter in law and her parents. We were on our way to Bali when we received a message from my son that Elodie my daughter in law had met with a motorbike accident. The remaining 4 hours of flight were stressful as we had no idea what had exactly happened. On landing at Denpasar, Bali, we had to head…

Delish and Evil Theme: No bake Desserts BM#78 Week 3 Day 3 When I saw so many dark ruby red cherries at the market and in the supermarket, I was tempted to bake a black forest cake. Basically a Black Forest cake, is layers of chocolate cake, kirsch soaked cherries, grated chocolate and whipped cream. Kirsch(kirsch wasser) is a spirit made from tart cherries. I would have loved to bake this cake or gateau as its called. However, my family would have probably thrown me out with all the dessert I’m making for the past few days. Remember I mentioned in the last dessert post that I was looking for brownies. Well, its for this dessert. Since I couldn’t bake the cake(who will eat it??)…

  • 648. Chocolate Avocado Pudding

    May 22, 2017mayurisjikoni

A big green berry Yes you read the title correct. Botanically speaking an avocado is a berry and thus classified as a fruit. It is a single berry fruit. There is much confusion as to whether it is a summer fruit or spring and nowadays its available in winter too. However, in Kenya where we don’t really have our climate divided into 3 or 4 seasons like winter, spring, summer and autumn, avocados are available mostly throughout the year. Some countries classify it as a summer fruit. So as far as I’m concerned summer fruit or not I decided to use it for our 93rd theme on FoodieMonday Bloghop group. The theme is Summer Fruits suggested by our group member Pushpita. It certainly isn’t hot…

Easy to make This is my second scone recipe. I don’t know why I don’t make them often enough. Maybe just the mental block that they are difficult to make. Trust me they are not. There are two reasons I came up with recipe. Firstly, my partner for Shhh Cooking Secretly, Jolly who has a wonderful blog Homemade Recipes gave me the ingredients condensed milk and plain flour(maida, all purpose flour) for our July theme#MonsoonTreats. Monsoon means hot treats like bhajias, soups, curries. I really couldn’t think what Monsoon treat to make using those ingredients.I narrowed it down to baking something but what was the question. Coming to my second reason.. my brother, bhabhi and niece are here in Mombasa. They’ve come to attend a wedding.…

    June 27, 2016mayurisjikoni

It’s great spending time with my son It’s a week since we arrived in Montreal. The weather is really hot. Good for the people of Montreal, after the long winter. People sun tanning in their balconies, in the parks, children playing under the water fountains, pet owners out with their pets, cold beers, barbecues even in the smallest balconies, alfresco dining, beautiful flowers, greenery, street festivals, people riding on their bikes, walking, hiking, an endless list of ice cream flavours. The whole city is bustling with activities. For me its just too hot (I get too much sun anyway in Mombasa). So I really don’t want to get out of the house till after 4pm when the heat is a bit bearable. However, sometimes we…

  • 564. Baked Doughnuts

    May 30, 2016mayurisjikoni

Doughnuts or Donuts? Which of the above two spellings is correct? Doughnut appears as the official spelling in the dictionaries but donuts is the contracted word of the original mostly used by Americans. What is a doughnut? A doughnut is a small fried cake made from a sweet dough. Its either in the shape of a ball or a ring. The ball shaped doughnuts are usually filled with fresh cream, jam or custard. The ring ones are glazed with icing, chocolate or fresh cream. If they are not glazed then the warm doughnuts are coated with sugar and cinnamon or other flavourings or spices. It is believed that during the mid 19th Century the Dutch were making olykoeks or oil cakes. These were fried in pork…

Chocolate Orange Swirl Buns#Bread Bakers Orangey Fragrance Not only is the combination of chocolate and orange heavenly, lovely, delish, flavourful but the aroma is just out of this world especially when baking. When Shireen Sequeira of Ruchik Randhap set the theme of baking with cocoa, cacao, carob in any form for the month of March, I was in a bit of dilemma. Have baked muffins, quick breads, bundt with cocoa. Don’t like carob at all. So I thought of a yeast bake but using cocoa, carob or cacao in a yeast bread, I was a bit apprehensive. Will it turn out too chocolatey, or just right? So the hunt for a recipe started. I knew it had to a yeast based bake though I so desperately…

something different What are brownies? No I’m not talking about the girl guides who are between the ages of seven to ten and called Brownies. I wonder if they still have brownies and girl guides in schools? I was a brownie and a girl guide when I was in school. No, my post is not on girl guides and brownies, but the brownies from the cookery world.  Brownies is a baked flat dessert that became popular in US and Canada during the first half of the 20th century.Depending on the density, it can be cakey or fudgy. They are made with chocolate, either melted chocolate or powder or both with nuts and sometimes dried fruits added to it. You can have a brownie either with…
