EVENT: A- Z CHALLENGE

THEME : A DISH BEGINNING WITH THE LETTER G

What is the A- Z Challenge? Well, we’re a Facebook group and every alternate month the participants make a dish with the  relevant letter. The group was started in May 2018 by Jolly Makkar and Vidya Narayan.

For the month of May (it’s already a year since the group began, time flies!) we have to post a recipe using an ingredient that begins with G.

G is not a difficult letter as such as there are many food items that begin with G. I normally don’t drink fizzy drinks but when its real hot, ginger ale is what I love sipping on.

With the scorching sun bearing down on us, the family was looking for a super cold drink. With berries, ginger ale and ice in abundance, a punch was born.

What is a punch?

A punch is an alcoholic or non alcoholic mixture of drinks with some fruit or fruit juice added to it. It is believed that the drink was introduced  from India to UK in the early 17th century. They are usually served at large parties from large punch bowls in punch cups or glasses.

We neither had a punch bowl or proper punch glasses but that did not stop us from enjoying the super cold drink.  Ginger ale pairs well with rum, vodka, whiskey, white wine or bourbon if you want to add some alcohol.

Its very easy to make this very cooling and quenching drink. Add fresh fruits of your choice.

GINGER ALE PUNCH

Serves 4

2 cans (approx 710ml) ginger ale

1 cup chopped mixed fresh fruit (I took strawberries, blueberries, blackberries)

½ cup fresh lemon juice

lots of ice cubes

  1. Add the fruit into a punch bowl or serving jug.
  2. Lightly mash the fruit with a pestle. Not too much, just to allow some juice to be released from it.
  3. Add lemon juice and mix well.
  4. Add ice cubes.
  5. Add ginger ale and mix gently.
  6. Serve immediately.

Tips:

  • Add fruits of your choice.
  • Add lots of ice for a very cold drink.
  • Add alcohol like whiskey, rum, vodka, bourbon, wine if you like.
  • Add mixed berry juice for a different taste.

Every time I hear the term Ginger Ale, I am taken back to the time I read Enid Blyton and wondered what this magical drink that seemed to be an integral part of picnics was. Now that I make it so often, I look for variations to spice it up and yours is just the kind I like. 🙂
