Tawa Pulao

April 30, 2018mayurisjikoni

EVENT: FOODIEMONDAY/BLOGHOP

THEME: #142 THE LEFTOVERS

RECIPE: TAWA PULAO

Tawa pulao is a flavourful, delicious and easy to make rice dish. I purposely make more of the Pav Bhaji, bhaji so that I can make this tawa pulao. Served with some yogurt, yogurt drink and papad along with chopped onions, it makes a perfect lazy day meal.

Mumbai And Juhu Beach

Whenever we’re I Mumbai, a walk on Juhu beach is a must nearly everyday. This year the walking session was cut short when I tripped on a brick buried in the sand and fractured my toe!

Enjoying meals right from pav bhaji, dabeli, tawa pulao to falooda on the beach is what I love. However, Hubby doesn’t like to eat from the canteens on the beach. The colours and aromas are just too irresistible for me. I’m always looking for someone who will join me to enjoy these meals. Can think of tummy bugs later!

Memories

It was during a wedding shopping event for my cousin that a group of 6 ladies, my cousins, aunt and her sisters we all enjoyed numerous dishes at the food stalls on Juhu Beach. We ordered so many dishes and tried them all out. One was tawa pulao. The man simply took a bit of the bhaji on the tawa, added some plain cooked rice on the side of the big tawa. He sautéed some onions and chilis in some oil. Add the bhaji, mashed it up a bit, sprinkled some red chilli powder and chaat masala. Mixed in the plain rice. Served with a generous topping of chopped coriander and onions, the rice was simply so tasty.

By the way my cousin, whose wedding shopping we all enjoyed and had loads of fun, recently celebrated her  14th Wedding Anniversary. It seems it was just the other day we had so much fun.

More About Tawa Pulao

Its one of the simplest recipes ever if you have leftover rice and some leftover pav bhaji masala or the bhaji as it is called.  After coming back home, I once made extra pav bhaji masala. Next day mixed it with rice and served it to hubby. We both loved the dish. Now whenever I prepare pav bhaji, I make sure I have made some extra masala or bhaji.  Most Indian homes have rice or chapatis left over in their fridge.

The charming part of this recipe is that you can take any proportion of rice and pav bhaji masala or bhaji to make a wholesome, lip smacking and filling meal in a jiffy. I like to take equal parts of both the rice and masala.

FoodieMonday/ Bloghop Theme

For this week’s  FoodieMonday/ Bloghop Group’s #142nd theme Mallika who blogs at A Foodie Housewife. at  chose the theme as The Leftovers. Make anything from any leftover dish. Before Mallika suggested leftovers, I had prepared pav bhaji for dinner the previous day. So obviously I jumped at the suggestion of the theme as an extra bright bulb lit in my brains  saying ‘tawa pulao, tawa pulao’. My contribution towards this theme is a combination of leftover rice and leftover pav bhaji masala.

Like minds think alike, Mallika too used leftover pav bhaji masala or bhaji to make a delicious Masala Vada Pav. A different kind of Vada Pav from the usual traditional one. Go on check out the recipe.

Some More Dishes To Check Out Using Leftovers

I usually make vaghareli roti from leftover rotis, Idli chaat from leftover idlis, Amiri khaman from leftover dhokras, dhokri from leftover dal, theplas from leftover khichdi. The list is endless. The charming part of this recipe is that you can take any proportion of rice and pav bhaji masala to make a wholesome, lip smacking and filling meal in a jiffy. I like to take equal parts of both the rice and masala. You should check out how Renu uses leftover dal or lentil curry to make some delicious looking pancakes.

As I mentioned above, I cannot resist making more bhaji or masala so that hubby and I can enjoy tawa pulao. As I made this dish recently, I thought my photos need a bit of an update.

Ingredients Required For Tawa Pulao

Leftover Plain Rice – can be white or brown. I’ve even used quinoa occasionally.

Leftover Pav Bhaji Masala or Bhaji – check out my Pav Bhaji recipe as how to make the bhaji or mixed vegetable curry.

Salt – to add to the tawa rice and also for the onion salad.

Onion – medium or large onion, peeled and sliced. Also chop a small onion finely to serve on the side as a salad.

Lemon Juice – for the finely chopped onion

Red Chilli Powder – to add to the masala and also to the onion salad.

Oil – any vegetable oil. Can use a mixture of ghee and oil.

Cumin Seeds – jeera or jeeru. I like to add as it gives extra flavour.

Serve With:

Roasted Papad

Plain Yogurt or Chaas – Chaas is savoury yogurt drink. I like to serve it with either Vaghareli Chaas or Coriander Garlic Chaas

  • Spices in the leftover pav bhaji masala get more infused and tastes really nice the following day. So best to use leftover masala for this dish.

Variations made from leftover rice are my favorite for breakfast and tawa pulao made with bhaji or even pav bhaji masala tops the list! It’s so tangy and flavorful! Love this!!

Thanks Mallika. After reading your comment, I now see the difference, bhaji and pav bhaji masala. :0 Actually used the bhaji with the rice. Gujjus tend to call it masala!
