Recipe: Easy Homemade Chocolate

What better occasion than Raksha Bandhan to make these delicious Easy Homemade Chocolate as my brothers love chocolates. With simple pantry ingredients, you can easily make chocolates at home.

What is Raksha Bandhan?

Rakshabandhan is a special day celebrated by brothers and sisters. On this day sisters tie a sacred thread or rakhi on their brothers wrist and in return the brothers promise to protect them just as the word Raksha means. Its also a day that sisters look forward to receiving special gifts from their brothers. In the olden times when women got married, they were not able to visit their parents homes often and parents. Traditionally parents would not go to their daughter’s homes. Raksha Bandhan was a day when the married women could travel to their parents home or the brothers could visit the sisters. Nowadays, no one has to wait for special occasions to visit family.

According to the Hindu mythology, Draupadi the wife of the Pandavas, had torn a corner of her sari to tie on Lord Krishna’s wrist when he was bleeding. Thus a bond that of brother sister developed between them. And as promised that He would protect her Lord Krishna came to her aid when the evil Prince Duhshasana tried to disrobe her (Vastraharana).

Memories

While growing up, my mum discouraged the idea of my brother giving us money and instead it use to be a promise that he would not fight with me. Well, that promise usually would not even last for a day! And yet my brother and I are the best of friends. Though younger by a year, he takes his duty of protecting his sisters pretty seriously. It has been quite a few years that I haven’t been able to tie rakhi personally on my brother’s wrist as he lives in UK and I in Mombasa. However, that doesn’t lessen our love for each other and I know in my heart that I can always turn to him and my bhabhi for whenever I need them.

The Ceremony

Traditionally, its the day everyone gets up early and puts on their best clothes. The brother sits on a low seat and the sister puts a red dot or tilak on his forehead along with a few grains of rice. Then with a lit ghee diya or lamp, she circulates that in front of him, signifying the sacred bond between a sister and brother. Then the rakhi or scared thread is tied on the right wrist. The sister then feeds her brother something sweet. In return he does the same. Olden times usually a piece of jaggery or sugar lump was fed but these days its anything from Indian sweets like barfi, peda, ladoos to chocolates.

My tradition for years

I grew up in a joint family, and with cousins visiting our home during the weekends and school holidays. So, as a result I tie rakhis to my brother and 5 of my cousins. However, I don’t consider them as my cousins but always refer to them as my brothers. 3 of them always treat me like their ‘real’ sister. I’m one of those unfortunate sisters who doesn’t get the opportunity to tie a rakhi physically to any of them as they all live in UK and one lives in Nairobi. However, I don’t forget to tie a rakhi to Lord Balram, brother of Lord Krishna. And its at time I ask God to bless them with good health, peace and happiness.

What I make during Raksha Bandhan

Though my brothers are not near me, I always make something special during Raksha Bandhan. I try and make something different as I always offer it to Lord Balram. This year I decided to make an easy homemade chocolate, which I’m sure they all would love.

Previous Years I’ve made different sweet dishes, usually something they love like:

Ingredients required for Easy Homemade Chocolate:

  • Milk Powder – full fat milk powder works well
  • Mixed Nuts Powder – I used cashew nuts, almonds and walnuts and processed them into a coarse powder.
  • Unsweetened  Cocoa Powder
Water – to make the sugar syrup
  • Butter – I’ve used salted but you can use unsalted if you wish
  • Vanilla Extract – for flavoring. Feel free to use any other flavors of your choice like almond, mint, orange zest, cardamom, cinnamon, etc.
  • Chocolate Chips – I’ve mixed both dark and milk. You can mix both or use either. If you don’t get chocolate chips, use chocolate bars and cut into small pieces before measuring.
  • For topping:  Use sprinkles, chopped nuts, dried fruits, etc.

Ingredients

For The Chocolate Balls:

  • 1 cup full fat milk powder
  • 1 cup mixed nuts coarse powder
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¼ cup butter

For The Sugar Syrup:

  • ¾ cup sugar
  • ½ cup water

For The Coating:

  • 1 cup chocolate chips dark, milk or both

Topping:

  • some chopped nuts, sprinkles or dried fruit
  • extra butter for greasing

Instructions

Preparation of the Sugar Syrup:

  • Mix water and sugar in a heavy bottom pan and boil it till it becomes a thick syrup about 1 thread consistency.
  • To check for one thread consistency, after five minutes of boiling, place a small amount of syrup on a saucer. Take it with your finger and press it with your thumb. Open it. If you can see a string then thats one thread consistency. If you cant see the thread, let the syrup cook for a further few minutes.
  • Take the sugar syrup off the heat.

Preparation of the Chocolate Balls:

  • Sift cocoa powder and milk powder together in a mixing bowl.
  • Add the nut powder and mix well.
  • When the sugar syrup is ready add butter and vanilla extract. Mix well till the butter melts.
  • Add the milk powder mixture into the syrup.
  • Mix it well.
  • Let the mixture cool down a bit.
  • Line a tray with parchment paper.
  • Grease your hands with some butter and roll the mixture into balls. I usually take about a teaspoonful.
  • Place the rolled balls on the prepared tray.

Preparation of Melted Chocolate

  • You can put the chocolate chips in a microwaveable bowl and melt it in the microwave.
  • I prefer to melt it over hot water.
  • Place the chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl that just sits at the mouth of a saucepan.
  • Add about 2 inches deep of water in the saucepan and bring it to a boil.
  • Place the bowl with chocolate over it and mix till the chocolate melts.

Coating the Chocolate Balls:

  • Place one rolled ball into the melted chocolate.
  • Using a fork remove the ball from the melted chocolate. Tap the fork against the bowl to remove excess chocolate.
  • Place the coated ball on the tray.
  • Repeat the above steps with the remaining balls.
  • Sprinkle your topping over them.
  • Put the tray in the fridge till the chocolate sets.

Notes

  • Don't have time to roll the balls. Then just pat it down into a greased and parchment lined tray. Pour the melted chocolate over it. Cut into squares.
  • For nut free chocolate, replace the nut powder with milk powder.

Homemade chocolates are always better than store bought. Loved your recipe for chocolate. It requires ingredients that are easily available at home. Also I loved what your mom say. More than money, we all need that true affection. That’s so lovely.

On the Raksha Bandan day, we have a festival called Avani Avittam where men will change their sacred thread. And we have a similar festival like raksha bandhan on Karthikai deepam day that falls in Nov – Dec.

Home made chocolates are the best. You can add so many flavours to it. A perfect treat for all the brothers out there on this festive occasion. We have Upakarma where men in the house change the sacred thread. Special delicacies are made to celebrate this festival.

Moms advice is the best for money comes and goes. But love remains.
As for the chocolate recipe its similar to what I used to make only never added nuts. Nuts will give an awesome flavor.
    Happy Rakshabandhan to you.

This homemade chocolate surely has a traditional festive twist to it. Kind of truffles fusion! I love the stories and memories you weave through your recipes. I believe that our recipes are an expression of our culture, memories, thoughts all of it. Lots of admiration for the love with which you make sweets on Rakhi every year even though you don’t physically get an opportunity to tie rakhis to your brothers.
